Happy May, readers!
This month, western Queens is abuzz with activity as usual.
We at the magazine are excited for you to read about what’s
happening in your neighborhoods of LIC, Astoria, Sunnyside
and beyond!
On page 14, we introduce you to a barbecue franchise
location coming to Long Island City. Married couple Mike and
Paula Dolan are bringing four Mighty Quinn’s restaurants to
the ever-growing neighborhood. The flagship location opened
in New York’s East Village in 2012, introducing diners to
“artisanal, wood-fired barbecue in a fast casual setting.”
Our reporters went into your neighborhoods this month
and brought back some great community news stories. We
tell you how local leaders and residents rallied outside One
Court Square to find a permanent home for the local library.
We also give you a sneak peak at the events happening at The
Arc, a “20,000-square-foot, multi-purpose center” in Astoria’s
Kaufman Arts District. These stories and more on page 20.
Our Features section showcases a heartwarming story
about Long Island City’s Fortune Society, a nearly 50 year old
organization dedicated to helping the formerly incarcerated
successfully re-enter society. We also profile Tang-Wei Hsu,
a Sunnyside-based Taiwanese artist who has been commis-sioned
to create art all over the world. Turn to page 32 to
check out these stories.
Ice & Vice returns to Long Island City for its 2019 pop-up
shop. The Manhattan-base ice cream shop brings its unique
seasonal flavors, ice cream sandwiches and pies to a con-verted
art studio on Jackson Avenue. Read all about the new
mouthwatering sweets and treats on page 47.
If you’re looking for fun art exhibits or events in your area,
refer to our calendars on pages 50 and 52. If you have any
tips or news you would like to share with us, reach out to me
at jbagcal@qns.com. Enjoy the rest of the month and see
you in June!
