SASHA POGREBINSKY Lately more and more mixologists and craft bars are experimenting with beer cocktails. Beer cocktails are fun, approachable, and they can be an easy way for someone who doesn’t regularly enjoy cocktails to try out something new while also staying in their comfort zone. So here are a few great beer cocktails that you can try at home! Black and Tan (or, “Half and Half”) The black and tan is an old cocktail that you don’t see on bar menus any more, which is a shame because it could be the oldest cocktail ever. It is so simple that any one could do it, and only old school bar flys know where to order one and when. So what is it? It’s one part pale ale beer poured into a glass, and then one part a stout - hence the name the Black and Tan. In Ireland it is known as Half and Half. The Longdrink This one is a little more complex then the Black and Tan, but what isn’t? You’ll need a shaker, ice, St. Germain liquer, fresh lemon, rye whiskey, and pilsner. Throw 1 ounce of St. German, 1/2 ounce of fresh lemon juice, 1 spoon of agave nectar, 1/2 ounce of rye whiskey into shaker with ice, agave, and shake well. Then empty into a tall glass (kind of like a Collins glass), and add the beer to top it off. Garnish with a fresh lemon wedge. Smooth Cider This is a classy cider beertail and involves three beers all mixed together, so it’s also simple but the balance is perfect. You’ll need an amber hard cider, a hefe-weisse beer and a Chimay Blanc. This recipe has been circling around for a few years – pour equal parts into a chilled chimay or wine glass and serve!
