FROM THE EDITOR
Spring has sprung, LIC Readers! We don’t know
about you, but we’re looking forward to some
warmer weather and more sunlight.
We’ve got a great issue for you this month. If
you’re looking to play tennis or encourage your
kids to, Court 16 is a new tennis club in Long
Island City. The club opened in February and the
founder, Anthony Evrard is a Belgian native that
began playing tennis when he was 5 years old.
The club has children’s classes but also allows
parents to learn the sport along with their kids.
Last October, the MTA shut down several train
stations along the N/W lines to conduct repairs
in Astoria. We spoke to business owners along
30th Avenue we said the shutdown has negatively
impacted their businesses and are calling on the
city for financial help.
In Long Island City, Forever Cheese has been
importing cheese and other food products from
Italy, Spain, Portugal and Croatia for 20 years.
The company began out of an apartment in Long
Island City and now Michele Buster and Pierluigi
Sini import around 500 items that are sold all
around the country.
In Astoria, we speak to parents and children at
Kud Halaturko, a dance program that aims to teach
children traditional folk dancing native to Balkan
countries like Montenegro, Bosnia, Albania and
Macedonia. Children from the ages of 5 to 18 are
taught by choreographer Samir Handanovic, who
has been teaching this style of dance for 37 years.
5 Pointz artists scored a major victory in February
when a judge ruled that developers owed them
$6.7 million for not giving them advanced notice
that their work would be whitewashed.
A Long Island City group is asking for help to
create beauty bags to give to women in domestic
violence and homeless shelters in the neighbor-hood.
We spoke to founder of Super Community
LIC Julz Donald to highlight her efforts to give
back to Long Island City residents.
As always, we have the latest in real estate and
fun events to attend throughout western Queens.
