8 L E H A V R E N E W S D E C E M B E R “Creativity takes courage.” ~ Henri Matisse BY JILL DAVIS The Le Havre Art League hosted is annual art show on Sunday, November 20 in the Clubhouse, and in case you didn’t attend, you missed a lovely afternoon. Once again the show featured the work of a diverse group of local artists whose talents range from photography to oil painting to jewelry making and more. We give a special shout-out to the new artists exhibiting their work for the very first time at the show. Dot Schwartz, who lives a stone’s throw away at Cryder Point, was one of the newcomers. She presented her unique wood carvings and an impressive collection of her pencil and scratch art. Perhaps the only thing more striking than her pencil and scratch art is how long Dot’s been working in these art forms. “I started this past September,” she explained. Yes, that’s September, 2016! Nina Gomez was another first-time exhibitor at the show. Her distinctive array of jewelry included pieces made of wood, beads and metal. Who would think of adorning a rock with a pin? Nina did, and they make super-pretty, super-stylish paperweights. “I was able to get more involved in creating my pieces once I retired,” she said. Adam Hardy is originally from England but has been a Beechhurst resident for the past ten years. He works in a variety of media including charcoal, paint on glass in gouache (pronounced goo-ash), which is similar to acrylic paint, and in paper collages. “I enjoy working in all forms, although paper collages are my specialty,” Adam said. The detail in the collages is exceptional; what tools does he use to create those delicate forms? “Scissors,” he said (and a very steady hand, to be sure). Of course the show wouldn’t have been complete without the exhibits of several returnees. Readers of the Le Havre Courier see Helene Oelerich’s work every month in her Dining Diva restaurant column which includes her mouth-watering photos. At the art show, Helene showed her versatility with a terrific assortment of shots that capture nature, as well as buildings, bridge and skylines, at their most beautiful. Diane Menna also exhibited her enchanting, and often inspiring, pieces in mixed media using oils and watercolor on mixed media, including stone. Jim Bischoff, also of Le Havre, was back as well with a new collection of his stylized photos, in which he blends painting and photography to create impressionistic images that make the original picture all the more engaging. He smiled and said, “I’ve been doing this a long time…I used to be the father of this form, now I’m the grandfather.” Mary Singh, another Beechhurst resident, had a colorful display of jewelry and knitted items. “I’ve worked with patients in nursing homes and use my pieces to help with fund raising,” she said. Vincenza (Enza) Russo has been retired for a couple of years and has used her new-found free time to hone her art. “I work in oil on canvas,” she said. “I do my paintings free-hand, and they’re all originals.” And we learned something new about Charles Bentz, whose paintings are on display in Logan’s 8 LEHAVRE COURIER | DECEMBER 2016 | WWW.QNS.COM Dot Schwartz’s captivating display Nina Gomez Charles Bentz’s paintings at Logan’s Helene Oelerich’s fab photos Mark Capon and Chuck Bentz Mary Singh’s unique jewelry
