It’s Copenhagen, 1926, and Danish artist Gerda Wegener painted her husband, Einar, as a woman. The painting became popular, and Einar began to change his appearance into a female and renamed himself Lili. In time Lili attempted one of the first male-to-female sex reassignment surgeries in history, resulting in seismic revelations for Gerda and her marriage.
