Le Havre Blast from the Past, Part 3
BY STEVE YOUNG, VICE PRESIDENT
I’ve been focusing in recent
times on Le Havre as it was
in the beginning, and its
story is certainly unique.
The town of Whitestone
has a parallel history with
an ambiguous future. I
originally moved here for
two reasons – the beauty of Le
Havre and the quaintness of the town
and surrounding areas. Forty-five
years ago, Whitestone was a small
town with a country setting–antique
stores, a movie theatre and a stressfree
environment. We pan to the
present and find 99 Cent stores, no
parking, and built-out homes.
On the positive side, the school
district is still great and you can walk
for miles by the water and witness
the sun setting by the bridge at night
which a beautiful sight to see. Texas
and Florida hurricanes, California
fires – give me New York any time!
Below is an excerpt from a rental
advertisement for Le Havre posted
by Realty Equities Corporation
in 1970. It appears that the main
focus on the property was on
the building that now houses
the Management Office,
the Clubhouse and the
Maintenance Department.
“An eight-room building
situated on one acre of
waterfront property adjoins
the main clubhouse and is currently
used as the center of a number
of activities. The activities include
those undertaken by the art club, the
bridge club, the yachting club, the
day camp and various social organizations.
Two tennis courts and the
tennis “pro shop” are adjacent to this
building. A kiddy swimming pool 15
x 25 is available for this day camp.
A one-story contemporary building
houses a teenage recreation center,
a coffee shop and additional locker
rooms. Three tennis courts adjoin
this building and are converted into
a skating rink throughout the fall and
winter months by artificial ice-making
machinery. Located between this
building and a sand beach is a 35 x
80-foot swimming pool”.
I’ve added some pictures and would
love some more, if anybody has any
to share.
