OUT & ABOUT
BY JILL DAVIS
Father’s Day is Sunday, June 20. A survey
of 2,000 fathers conducted in 2019
by OnePoll asking what they wanted for
Father’s Day is particularly interesting:
Even though that survey was conducted
pre-pandemic, the wish list holds up in 2021.
Almost half (47%) of dads want ‘a phone
call from their kid(s),’ followed by a simple
‘big juicy steak’ (41%). The top three are
rounded out by ‘peace and quiet’ and ‘taking
in a ball game’ (tied at 38%). Dads are easy
to please!
“I gave my father $100 and said, ‘Buy
yourself something that will make your life
easier.’ So he went out and bought a present
for my mother.” —Rita Rudner
“My daughter got me a ‘World’s Best Dad’
mug. So we know she’s sarcastic.” —Bob
Odenkirk
“Me and my dad used to play tag. He’d
drive.” —Rodney Dangerfield
“Remember: What dad really wants is a
nap. Really.” —Dave Barry
“Raising kids may be a thankless job with
ridiculous hours, but at least the pay sucks.”
—Jim Gaffigan
Know Before You Go
As Covid rules are easing up, events in and
around the area are a mish-mash of in-person,
virtual, drive-in or what have you. It’s
expected that Covid restrictions will relax
more as the summer progresses, so it’s best
to check a venue’s website for the most
recent guidelines before you head out.

Okay, so no Triple Crown
this year after longshot
Rombauer overtook
Kentucky Derby winner
Medina Spirit in the
homestretch of the Preakness. Medina Spirit will be
kicking off his horse shoes this go-round since trainer
Bob Baffert’s been suspended from entering horses
in New York races, but Rombauer will be in it to win
it. We’ll see how well he can hold up during the long
mile-and-a-half contest.
Go to the website for ticket info, but if you want to
watch it from the comfort of your couch, the race
will be airing on Channel 4. Post time is 6:49 pm but
there’ll be lots of horsing around starting at 3 pm.

qpac.org
The Queensborough Performing Arts Center presents
Steve Leslie, a Grammy-Award winning songwriter,
to pay tribute to James Taylor in a live—and free--virtual
concert. The repertoire will include many of
Taylor’s best-known songs, including Carolina In
My Mind, Shower The People, You’ve Got A Friend,
Fire and Rain, Up On The Roof and more. You can

(Queensborough Performing Arts Center).
145TH
WESTMINSTER
DOG SHOW
Friday, June 11 –
Sunday, June 13
westerminsterkennelclub.
org
This item is more
‘about’ than ‘out.’ For years, the WKC dog show
has been held in indoors in February at MSG in
Manhattan. This year, the show will be held outdoors
in June at Lyndhurst Mansion in Tarrytown. Not that
it matters, since the Club isn’t selling tickets, i.e., no
spectators. Even with eased rules, it seems that this
decision will hold. But fear not, dog lovers. You can
watch the show on TV on USA or CNBC—note the
two networks are splitting the coverage, so check
listings as the dates get closer.
DRIVE-IN
CONCERT AT
BAY TERRACE
Sunday, June 27,
7 pm
212-45 26th Avenue,
Bayside
qpac.org
The Soul Cruisers
is an 11-piece
group that’s been together for 20 years and features
the music of Motown, soul and R&B. The
Queensborough Performing Arts Center is continuing
to hold its live events as drive-in concerts, at
least for the time being. The downside is that it’s
harder to boogie in your car, but the upside is that
you can turn on the a/c if it gets too hot. Tickets are
$50 for one person in a car/$100 for two or more
in a car. Rain date is Tuesday, June 29; go to the
website for more details.
FIREWORKS AT

Even though the
show doesn’t start
till 9:30, travelers
are advised to get
there early—traffic starts to spike around 6:00.
There’s a $10 fee, but if you have a NYS seasonal
Empire Pass, it will be accepted. Tip: You can also
watch the show from Wantagh Park or Cedar Creek
Park with no fee after 4 pm. Might be a little less
crowded, too. Go to the Jones Beach website for
