Despite the fact that the Corona Virus is bugging
us, Nature moves on through her seasons with a
perfect regularity. Spring is here with all its bursts
of color, splendor and its chirping birds and darting
squirrels.
Each morning I try to join a walking group in Alley
Pond Park called the Alley Pond Striders. Some are
runners and some like me are walkers, either alone
or with others on the paved Motor Parkway. The
parkway was built in early 20th Century by William
Vanderbilt as a private road to avoid traffic and allow
him to make his way to his country estate easily
through a pastoral setting of trees and fields beyond.
The parkway now cuts through the park with no cars
allowed.
Today I walk along the road admiring the varied
trees, grass, moss and birds. Or, on other days, we
walk through the park’s rustic trails, passing fallen
trees and ponds with water fowl and turtles. The trees
are old and many are very tall, providing delightful
shade during the hot summer.
See a few pictures of the trails here and come join
our club. We walk Saturdays and Sundays for about 1
1/2 hours and admire the passing scenes as we walk.
Now during the coronavirus crisis, we walk daily to
relax in such a peaceful place. Want more info? Go
