Meet-and-Greet with both community
and legislative leaders. At
the Queens Library, she is on the
Student Leadership Council. In this
position she participates in food
and coat drives.
Scholarship is also evident by
her enrollment in and excelling
in several Advanced Placement
programs. Among these college
level classes are: World History,
French, Environmental studies,
United States History, Literature
and Composition, and Government
and Politics.
College Now, a preparatory
program offered to high school
students, is another program in
which Darla hones her future
achievements. She is enrolled in
two College Now classes: Caribbean
History at York College; and
Psychology 101 at Queensborough
Community College
Ferruso observes, “Over the
course of the school year I have
been able to get to know Darla as
both a student and as an individual.
Her dedication to improving
upon her learning places her
as one of the top students. In the
classroom her strong commitment
to learning is always displayed
through active participation in our
lectures, discussions and activities.
She is a classroom leader who
pushes those around her to strive
for a high standard. Her motivation
and deep refl ection on coursework
will provide a great transition into
higher learning and as a leader in
her community.”
He also explains that, as the
school year progressed he witnessed
Darla’s development in the
areas of self-confi dence, determination
and maturity. “Her high standards
were exemplifi ed when she
presented a culminating research
project for AP US History. Writing
with poise and perspective, the
presentation of this content matter
showed mastery of the subject,” he
states.
Outside of school with the encouragement
from teachers, Darla
participated in the NYU Women’s
Mentoring Program. Within the
program she became President
of the group and was awarded a
$1500 Scholarship. She also had
a summer internship at Legal Hand.
Legal Hand is a non-profi t which
gives legal assistance to those in
need.
In the future she plans to attend
Syracuse University or Trinity
College. Whichever school she attends,
Darla plans to be a double
major in Political Science and
International Relations. Using these
two areas of study she hopes to
be an advocate for people’s rights.
Among her dreams is to work for
the United Nations. Her philosophy
is: ”Education is the ultimate Equalizer.”
Mr. Ferruso confi dently states “I
believe Darla can achieve anything
when provided with the right opportunities.
Her intelligence, strong
work ethic, and ability to lead others
will ultimately lead to success in
the future. She is one of those rare
students who are extremely focused
on her goals, and has the mindset
needed to achieve them. I believe
Darla’s goals of working within
public service will be a tremendous
benefi t for the lives of those she
touches.”
