Vincy Xi Wang Awakens Emotions Through Authentic Film
Jennifer Aline Graham
FILM FESTIVALS AND A FUTURE IN SCI-FI
From being an award winner at the 2020 Central States
IndieFanFilmFest for NIU NIU to winning at the WorldFest Houston
International Film Festival for When I Find You in 2020, there is no
questioning the raw talent Wang has. With dozens of film awards
under her belt - as well as being a finalist, official selection, and
Vincy Wang
honorable mentions at many events – her vision for emotionally
expressive film continues to grow. Her festival successes also show
how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted her mindset and her work.
“As my mind swirled around in a quarantine-induced downward
spiral, film changed from an escape from monotony to an anchor
to sanity,” Wang says. Though the pandemic negatively touched
the lives of millions when it came to conquering their goals, Wang
was able to focus on film to stay productive. Wang’s productivity
will be witnessed at the Shawna E. Shea Film Festival benefitting
the Shawna E. Shea Memorial Foundation where Wang’s film, NIU
NIU, will compete September 21st through the 25th in Sturbridge,
Massachusetts.
On top of exciting events Wang is partaking in this fall, she also
looks forward to a passion project of hers she has been diligently
working on, directing a feature film Yudao. “I am looking forward to
directing this film as well as producing a new sci-fi miniseries,” says
Wang. “There will also be several screenings of my work showing
in China and the United States.”

Vincy Xi Wang may be changing the lives of many through the
artistry of film, but her vision doesn’t stop at creating life-changing
art. She believes “if you want to create something, you must enrich
your life” and that is exactly what Wang is doing with the purely
raw films she shares with the world.
WANG’S ARTISTIC APPROACH
It’s hard to ignore the beautiful originality radiating from the films
Vincy Wang creates. With a goal to “express a kind of confusion
and predicament that doesn’t need an answer,” Wang’s visual art
comes from a place deep within both her mind and her heart.
“I am inspired by the unnoticed nuances of everyday life,” says
Wang of what draws her to create the award-winning film she does.
“My films hover around pools of nostalgia without dipping in.”
Wang believes that everything she makes must enrich her life as well as
the lives of those who experience her films. The usage and manipulation
of the senses play a large role in how she goes about creating her films,
but she also stays as humble as possible during the process.
“Good work is not as important as a good life,” Wang states. “I
think the most important thing about life is not the film, not money,
not the so-called success. Your life will become the life you want
when you meet your true self.”
Wang’s films not only exhibit this mindset but help lead others
toward finding their true life’s calling.
VAST EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENTS
Graduating in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in broadcast and TV
directing, Wang decided to continue to the California College of
Arts where she received her master’s degree in film. Her impressive
talent and skills brought Wang to become an artist assistant with
Jenni Olson. She also participated a feature-length documentary,
Ai Wei Wei: Yours truly, for the SFFILM Festival.
However, Wang remains humble about her experience and
achievements when stating what initially pushed her to dive into
the field of film. “My biggest achievement was completing my very
first video,” admits Wang of the childhood memory. “Although it
was just a silly class project, watching all my hard work render into
something real awakened my drive to make movies.”
