BY JILL DAVIS
Okay, I’ll admit it, I sometimes add a little “Bah!” to my “Humbug!” during the holiday
season. I mean I’m not Scrooge, but I can’t say I’m Mrs. Claus either. There’s
only so much mirth and merriment one can take without eventually becoming a tad
“grinchy,” and at moments like those I turn to humor. So if you’re feeling a little on the
cranky side (or even if you’re not), here are a handful of helpful holiday quotes that I
hope will bring you a smile. If not, I give up.
“Once again, we come to the Holiday Season, a deeply religious time that each of
us observes, in his own way, by going to the mall of his choice.” – Dave Barry
“Mail your packages early so the post office can lose them in time for Christmas.”
—Johnny Carson
“Most Texans think Hanukkah is some sort of duck call.” — Richard Lewis
“Santa Claus has the right idea. Visit people once a year.” —Victor Borge
“I once wanted to become an atheist but I gave up—they have no holidays.” —
Henny Youngman
“I stopped believing in Santa Claus when I was six. Mother took me to see him in a
department store and he asked for my autograph.” – Shirley Temple
“What I don’t like about office Christmas parties is looking for a job the next day.”
— Phyllis Diller
“In the old days, it was not called the Holiday Season; the Christians called it ‘Christmas’
and went to church; the Jews called it ‘Hanukkah’ and went to synagogue; the atheists
went to parties and drank. People passing each other on the street would say ‘Merry
Christmas!’ or ‘Happy Hanukkah!’ or (to the atheists) ‘Look out for the wall!’” — Dave Barry
The Ten Tenors – Home for the Holidays
Sunday, December 10, 3pm
Colden Auditorium at Queens College
153-49 Reeves Ave, Flushing
kupferbergcenter.org
718-793-8080
I knew about the Three Tenors, but I’d never heard of the Ten Tenors (isn’t that overdoing
it a little?). But apparently they’re a big deal, having performed before more
than 90 million people to-date. In this concert, they’ll be performing classic and
contemporary Christmas songs, and their promotion says, “The Ten Tenors’ overall
vision is to create a feeling of comfort and warmth for a family gathering.” I think they
assume that you like your relatives. Tickets are $30-$55.
Holiday Cookies & Crafts
Saturday, December 16, 1pm-3pm
Ft. Totten Castle
bayside historical.org
718-352-1548
Here’s a good way to keep the kids entertained
for an afternoon. Families are invited the
Castle at Ft. Totten to create their own decorations
celebrating the winter season. Hot cocoa
and cookies will be served, and Santa will be
making a guest appearance. It costs $5 per child with a max of $15 per family.

44th Annual Merry Tuba Christmas
Sunday, December 17, 3:30pm
Rockefeller Center Skating Rink
49th/50th Streets between 5th and 6th Ave.
rockefellercenter.com
Did you know that
the first Tuba Christmas
was presented
at Rockefeller Center
in 1974? And now
it’s a regular holiday
event in over 200 cities
around the world,
go figure. Anyway,
you might be having
visitors coming in for
the holidays and don’t
know how to entertain
them. Here’s an option
to consider…especially
if you’re not very
fond of your guests. Hundreds of tenor and bass tuba players will congregate to
play Christmas carols and tubists of all ages will line up under the Rockefeller Center
Christmas tree and “fill the plaza with the organ-line sound of low brass.” To make it
even more, ahem, interesting, spectators are encouraged to sing along. It’s free, so
we hope it will be worth the price of admission.
Holiday Open House
Tuesday –Thursday,
December 26–28,
12pm-4pm
Queens County
Farm Museum
queensfarm.org
718-347-3276
I’ve never had hot mulled
cider, but it sounds pretty
good if it’s at the old farmhouse.
This annual event
is one of the Farm’s most
popular, and it includes a
tour of the historic building
and seasonal crafts for the
kids. And it’s free!
New Year’s Eve
Skyline Cruise
Sunday, December 31,
8:30pm-2:00am
World’s Fair Marina,
Flushing
skylinecruises.com
Okay, this might be a little
pricey (and I just can’t stay
up that late anymore anyway),
but it does sound like
fun. The Skyline Princess will
sail around New York City
Harbor for five hours and
you’ll see a fireworks display.
The package includes
a buffet dinner, dessert and
an open bar, and there’s also
a DJ and dancing if you want
to really party hearty. Prices
start at $205 for adults and
$175 for children. Free parking
will be available at the
Marina.
