AUGUST 18
BY JILL DAVIS OOuutt About
&Japan surrendered from WWII on August 14, 1945; hence, VJ Day. Ever wonder what
VJ Day stands for? I didn’t think so, but I’ll tell you anyway. It’s short for “Victory Over
Japan Day.” Sadly, there aren’t many WWII vets still with us, but we salute your service
and honor your memory on this day.
Also this month: Happy Birthday, Orville Wright! Orville was born on August 19,
1871, and Franklin D. Roosevelt created National Aviation Day back in 1939 in Orville’s
honor back (so this is its 80th anniversary!).
I didn’t know, or at least I didn’t
remember from grade school history, that
it was Orville who was the first person
who successfully flew an airplane. I’m betting
it could have just as well have been his
brother Wilbur who flew but that Orville
lost the coin toss.
Here’s what’s going on this month:
Outdoor Movie: LEGO Movie 2
Friday, August 16, 2019, 8:15pm
Crocheron Park, Bayside
Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks and Will
Arnett lend their voices to this sequel to
the 2014 hit, “The Lego Movie.” Apparently
this time, LEGO DUPLO® invaders
from outer space have swooped in and are
wrecking everything faster than they can
rebuild. Sounds like a problem. The movie
is rated PG and it’s free. Be sure to bring
your own lawn chair or blanket (the park
says it’s not responsible for grass stains).
Winnie the Pooh

Here’s a nice weekday treat for
the kids. Winnie the Pooh and
his friends Eeyore, Piglet, Rabbit
and Tigger will be at Westbury
for a musical adventure in the
hundred-acre woods. We all
know that Pooh’s intentions are
always the best, but his passion
for honey keeps getting him into
trouble. Oh that silly Pooh! An
extra treat: the kids can meet
the characters after the show.
Tickets start at $20, but if you
can grab a Groupon you can get
20% off.

516-299-3100
Foodies and viewers of Channel 13
are probably familiar with Lidia Bastianich,
who is known for her earthy
Italian creations. She’ll be at Tilles to
talk about her career and her memoir,
My American Dream, billed as “a fascinating,
rags to riches immigration
story.” Erica Marcus, food writer for
Newsday, will moderate. The $44 ticket
includes a copy of Lidia’s book.

Santana & the Doobie
Brothers
Sunday, August 25, 7pm
Jones Beach Theater
895 Bay Parkway, Wantagh
jonesbeach.com
866-558-8468
Do you know it’s been 20 years already
since the release of Santana’s
album, “Supernatural” (the one with
the hit, “Smooth”)? And it’s been 50
years since Santana played at Woodstock!
Time marches on, I guess. Joining
Santana are the Doobie Brothers,
so this is quite a double bill! Note: this
is the finale of Santana’s 2019 tour, so
change your evil ways and go see it.
Tickets start at $93.
US Open Tennis
Monday, August 26 – Sunday, September 8
Flushing Meadows Park, Corona
usopen.org
Note: Quite a number of the tennis dates conflict with Mets’ home games, which
means traffic and parking will be a hotter mess than usual. The Open urges attendees
to take public transportation if at all possible. No matter if or how you go, it looks like
Dvokovic, Federer and Nadal are slated to compete. It’ll be interesting to see who winds
up in the Men’s Finals, especially after that nail-biter between Dvokovic and Federer at
Wimbledon last month.
Ticket prices for the Open run the gamut from plain ridiculous to totally insane, so
check out the website to determine whether you’ll have to refinance your apartment in
order to go.
And don’t forget Arthur Ashe Kids’ Day on Saturday, August 24! This is a super-popular
day that includes face-painting, games and prizes for the kids. Tickets for Kids’ Day
are $25 and gates open at 9:30am.
The Producers
Saturday, August 31 – Friday, September 13
Broadhollow Theatre
700 Hempstead Tpke., Elmont
broadhollow.org
516-775-4420
If you’ve never seen this hilarious Mel Brooks
movie, you really should check it out. In a nutshell,
the story follows a sleazy theatrical producer and a
wimpy accountant who plot to stage the biggest flop
in Broadway history. The film inspired its own Broadway
musical production, which was indeed a smash hit. Broadhollow Theatre is now
presenting the stage show at its theater in Elmont, so it’s both close to home and modestly
priced. Advance tickets are $27 ($25 for folks 65 and older) or $30 at curtain time.
Dates and show times vary, so check out the website or call for more info.
