Out &
About
BY JILL DAVIS
Out & About is back! Well, not exactly the way it was,
but then again, what is? Nevertheless, with outdoor dining
okayed in NYC and entrepreneurs becoming more creative,
there are some fun things to do this summer as we
tiptoe back to social activities. So get out there and have
some fun!
DINING OUT
It’s been quite a while since the words “dining” and
“out” have been able to be used in the same sentence,
but in June, New York City restaurants were finally
able to welcome diners for outdoor dining. Although
indoor dining remains off-limits in NYC, patrons can
now enjoy a meal “al fresco” during these warm summer
months.
In the area, Bell Boulevard has always offered a wide
variety of restaurants and the street is always jammed.
To help with the crowds who are popping to get out for
a nice dinner, the Bayside Village Improvement District
helped organize the expansion of street space to accommodate
TRIBECA FILM FESTIVAL

Robert DeNiro’s annual festival is going
on the road this summer and two of the
locations are local: Orchard Beach in
the Bronx and Nickerson Beach (Lido
Beach) in Nassau County. The series
takes place each weekend through August
2. Orchard Beach can fit 500 cars

restaurants and their diners.
That means there’s good news and bad news: The
good news is that Bell Boulevard between 39th and 41st
Avenues and 41st Avenue between Bell Boulevard and
214th Place will be fully closed to vehicles on Friday
evenings, from 5 to 11 p.m., Saturdays from 6 p.m. to 11
p.m., as well as Sundays from noon to 10 p.m. Restaurants
in the immediate area offering outdoor dining include
Bourbon Street, Donovan’s, One Station Plaza,
Papazzio, Press 195 and Uncle Jack’s.
The bad news is that parking, which is already a
challenge on Bell during peak times, will be even more
daunting—so plan ahead for a nice long walk back to
your car to work off your delicious meal. (At press time,
the expanded seating will continue until Labor Day,
Monday, September 7.)
Other restaurants offering outdoor dining in Bayside
that are a little bit out of the core include Trattoria
35 (Bell Blvd. & 35 Ave.) and La Veranda (208 St.
& Northern Blvd.). Even closer to home, Vivo! on the
Cross Island Parkway by the Clearview Golf Course and
Jaegerhaus on 149th Street have also opened for outdoor
dining.
It is recommended that you call the establishment or
check the restaurant’s website for specific hours of operation.

Parkinglotsocial.com
“Engines Off, Party On!” is the slogan. This US touring event mixes music, comedy
and movies and includes special “Social Kids” entertainment. When you get there,

Parking Lot Social gorillas. Local food vendors will be there to bring food
right to your vehicle. The exact location in Brooklyn wasn’t available at press time,
but we were able to find out that tickets are $30 per car. Find out more details on
their website as the start date gets closer.
TILLES CENTER DRIVE-IN CONCERTS
July 18 – August 29
Brookville, Long Island
Tillescenter.org
Tilles’s parking lot holds only about 100 cars, so getting tickets could be tricky.
Concertgoers are permitted to bring a lawn chair and sit outside their vehicle
(masks are required). Since there won’t be concession stands, this will be a BYOS
(bring your own snacks) affair. Each show will be 90 minutes and are rain or shine.
Concerts will include the Bruce Springsteen tribute band, The B Street Band;
the Swingtime Big Band; and the Long Island Concert Orchestra. Tickets start at
$29 per car and must be ordered in advance. More info can be found on the Tilles
website.
per screening, and Nickerson can hold
about 250. Orchard Beach screenings are
free, but Nickerson Beach will set you
back $26 per car.
Movies will be shown drive-in style
with IMAX on board to enhance the
image and sound quality for all Tribeca
Drive-In viewings, and IMAX has collaborated
with Tribeca Enterprises to curate
the program from its library of films. The
festival will present new, classic and independent
works from various filmmakers,
creators, and artists onto the big screen.
Films being shown at Orchard Beach
will include the Dark Knight, Straight
Outta Compton and Wonder Woman.
Nickerson’s slate will include Back to the
Future, Jerry Maguire and Spy Kids in its
line-up. Check out the Tribeca website for
more details.
