BY JILL DAVIS Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 12, is the big holiday this month. Happily, most kids
remember to call their mother: Did you know than an AT&T survey estimated that
122.5 million phone calls are made to Mom on Mother’s Day?
However, digging deeper into the data, other Mother’s Day research reveals that 11%
of people never call their mothers (for shame!) and 3% of children call Mom collect
(gasp!). Unfortunately, we do not have statistics on how many Moms refused the call
from their slacker kids.
“My mother used to say that there are no strangers, only friends you haven’t met
yet. She’s now in a maximum security twilight home in Australia.” ~ Dame Edna
Everage
“Neurotics build castles in the air; psychotics live in them. My mother cleans them.” ~
Rita Rudner
“My mom said the only reason men are alive is for lawn care and vehicle maintenance.”
~ Tim Allen
“When your mother asks, ‘Do you want a piece of advice?’ it’s a mere formality. It doesn’t
matter if you answer yes or no. You’re going to get it anyway.” — Erma Bombeck
“The phrase ‘working mother’ is redundant.” — Jane Sellman
Here are some fun things to do in and around the area in May. Have fun!
Comedian Brian Regan
Saturday, May 11, 8pm
Theatre at Westbury
960 Brush Hollow Road, Westbury
thethreateratwestbury.com
844-483-9008
You may have seen Brian Regan on one of the late-night
shows, and he’s done a couple of specials for Comedy Central.
He’s actually rather unique: A comedian who’s clean! He bills
his show as “live comedy for all tastes and ages.” But don’t
worry, he’s funny too, which is why he regularly sells out his
performances. Tickets start at $30.
Mother’s Day Brunch: Queens Botanical Garden
Sunday, May 12, 10am or 1pm
Queens Botanical Garden
43-50 Main Street, Flushing
queensbotanical.org
718-886-3800
The QBG is again hosting its annual
Mother’s Day Brunch and as
always, it looks to be a nice change
of pace from the usual Mom’s Day
offerings. The menu is created by
local caterers, which will include a
variety of hot dishes, muffins, coffees
and teas. Brunch will set you
back $65 for non-member adults and $30 for kids 4-12 (tykes under the age of three
are free). Reservations are required. But wait, there’s more! Before you head off for your
indulgent meal, you can have your picture taken with Mom in the gorgeous Wedding
Garden by a professional photographer ($20 for two pics; no appointment).
Queens County Farm: Seasonal Farmstand Opening
Opens Wednesday,
May 15, 11am
Queens County Farm Museum
73-50 Little Neck Parkway,
Floral Park
queensfarm.org
718-347-3276
Although you’ll have several
months to pop over to the Farm
to pick up your fresh produce (the
Farmstand is open through October),
each season’s opening day is
worth mentioning. The last real
farm in the area, Queens Farm
grows its own veggies right on the
premises, and you can’t get much
fresher than that. The Farm asks that you BYOB (bring your own bags) in which to bring
home your green goodies.

Bethpage Air Show
Friday, May 24-Sunday, May 26,
10am-3pm
Jones Beach State Park
www.bethpageairshow.com
631-321-3510
Don’t know what to do on Memorial
Day weekend? Check out this mighty
air show! Watch the US Air Force
Thunderbirds, the Royal Canadian Air
Force Snowbirds and a bunch of other
flying aces do their impressive high jinx
(pardon the pun) over these three days.
Friday is a practice day with the real
show on Saturday and Sunday. Word is
the place gets packed, so it’s advisable to
get there early—they say it’s not unusual
for the parking lots to be filled by 8am.
There are a bunch of advisories about
backpacks, taking photos, wearing earplugs,
etc., so it’s best to check out the
website for these important details before
you go. By the way, the event is free and parking costs just 10 bucks.
WFUV 80s Dance Party
Friday, May 31, 8pm-11pm
Tilles Center
720 Northern Blvd., Brookville
tillescenter.org
516-299-3100
Never heard of WFUV? It’s a public radio station (90.7 FM) based at Fordham University
in the Bronx. The kind folks up there are schlepping over the bridge and out to
Brookville to host a retro 80s dance party, complete with their own DJs, rock and disco.
Regular tickets are $50, but if you want to splurge on the private lounge, snacks and
cash bar, spring for the $75 level. Mullet cuts and extra hairspray are suggested but not
required.
