MAY 5 C R Y D E R P O I N T WWW.QUEENSCOURIER.COM | MAY 2013 | CRYDER POINT COURIER 5 “I have a good family that has always supported me,” Vassallo said. “My husband has been a great help.” Vassallo herself finds it hard to have free time throughout the course of a day, between being with her children and promoting her business. “The majority of my promotion comes from online,” she said. “But it also spreads a lot through word of mouth.” Despite the hectic schedule of working as a mother and makeup artist/ hair stylist, Vassallo said she’s happy with the way her life is. She’s wanted to work in this career for many years now. “I’ve always been interested in make-up, ever since I was a kid,” Vassallo said. “I love my job.” Vassallo says that being a mother and running a business is indeed a challenge, but says that doing both is rewarding. To help celebrate Mother’s Day, Vassallo will be offering 10% off on all appointments during the month of May. The stay-at-home mom of two relishes the fact that she has an easy commute – and the fact that she gets to spend as much time as possible with her kids. But, she said, “sometimes I think people think you’re so lucky because you get to stay home. Personally, I think it’s so much harder to stay at home and work all day.” One thing Skunca says she doesn’t miss about working full-time away from home is the daily commute, which she says cuts into the time she has to spend with her kids, Gavin, seven, and Olivia, four. “When you commute it’s like a 12 hour work day and you only have a few hours at the end of the day to spend with the kids,” she said. “When you’re home you get to enjoy every minute of every day with them. I just try to be very involved with my kids.” In addition to spending time with the kids during the day and bringing them to afterschool activities, Skunca looks forward to every Sunday of the week, which she and her husband, Jon, have dubbed their official family day. “We just spend time together as a family,” Skunca said. Since her husband, an insurance broker, works six days a week, the responsibility of raising the kids falls heavily on her. However, she stressed that her husband’s contribution in the upbringing of their kids is just as important, if not more so. “His working allows me to stay at home,” she said. “As well as providing the finances we need.” Before Gavin was born, Skunca worked as a sales/marketing assistant at Laurel cosmetics in Manhattan. She said the transition from full-time employee to full-time mother was an easy one for her. “I knew I wanted to be home with my kids,” she said. But when Olivia heads to preschool next year, Skunca says she plans to head back to work. “Nothing too crazy,” Skunca said. “Maybe six hours a day somewhere.”
