16 MARCH OOuutt & About
BY JILL DAVIS
March is a busy month! First, Daylight Saving Time begins on March 11 (hooray,
longer days!).
We can’t forget St. Patrick’s Day on the 17th, which is on a Saturday this year.
And of course, a Happy Passover (beginning on March 30th) and a Happy
Easter (April 1st) to all.
But wait…we can’t forget National Frozen Food Day on March 6th. This is a
real, honest-to-goodness day of recognition: on March 6, 1984, in a joint resolution,
Congress authorized this day as “Frozen Food Day.’’ Congress requested the
president, Ronald Reagan, to issue a proclamation, which he promptly did. Now
that’s bipartisanship!
Fun fact: Frozen foods first hit store shelves in 1930 in Springfield, Massachusetts.
None other than Clarence Birdseye developed the process.
The Beach Boys
Saturday, March 17,
7:30pm
Theater at Westbury
960 Brush Hollow
Road, Westbury
thetheatreatwestbury.com
516-247-5200
This is the real deal, not
a tribute band, and it’s The
Beach Boys’ only New York
area performance this year
(unless you want to schlep
out to New Jersey). Their current
tour will no doubt feature tunes from their iconic 1966 album, “Pet Sounds,”
which they recently re-released in good old-fashioned vinyl! But wouldn’t it be
nice to hear them sing those great songs live? Tickets start at $49.

If you’ve never listened to Big Band music,
I advise you to give it a whirl. This musical
revue of the genre returns to QPAC by popular
demand, showcasing retro-style singers
and dancers backed by the String of Pearls
Orchestra. You’ll be-bop to the music of Glenn
Miller, Tommy Dorsey, The Andrews Sisters,
Frank Sinatra and more. Who needs an Uber
when you’ll jitterbug all the way home? Tickets
are $30, $35 and $48.

DanceLessonsByLenny.com
718-767-4458
Warning: You might need a hip replacement
after learning these two
super-popular Latin dances (just kidding!).
Cryder Point’s Lenny Seasonwein
is back this spring and offering
lessons in the Bachata (7pm) and
the Rumba (8:30pm). Each class will
have 10 sessions, and Lenny advises,
“If you consider yourself a beginner,
don’t miss the first class!” As always,
you pay as you go: $15 per person/
per session, and parking in the Temple
lot is free!

Bayside Inaugural
St. Patrick’s Day Parade
Saturday, March 24, 10am
Bell Blvd. & 35th Avenue
It took a few years to get organized and secure
the necessary permits, but the village of
Bayside is finally kicking off its very first St. Patrick’s
Day Parade. Local restaurants including
Monahan & Fitzgerald, Jackson Hole and Brian
Dempsey’s are among the sponsors, and the
event promises to include bagpipers, marching
bands and Irish step dancers. Note: This is
a “green tie optional” event.
Moscow Festival Ballet: Giselle
Sunday, March 25, 2018, 3pm
Queensborough Performing Arts Center
222-05 56 Avenue, Bayside
qcc.cuny.edu
718- 631-6311
Ah, poor Giselle! Well, maybe not, since
love conquers all (including death) in this
ultimate Romantic ballet, first staged in
1841. Quick storyline: Village girl Giselle
falls in love with a man; the man is not all
he seems; girl discovers man’s deception
and dies of a broken heart. Said man is
stuck in the woods, haunted by the ghosts
of jilted women; girl returns as a spirit and
fights to save him. I can’t say I’d be as benevolent as Giselle, but if I were a ballerina,
I’d know this role is a career-making showstopper. In fact the New York
Times has called it “phenomenal.” Tickets are $39 and $42.
Michael Feinstein: The Crooners
Sunday, March 25, 7pm
Tilles Center
720 Northern Blvd., Brookville
tillescenter.org
516-299-3100
Fun fact: Michael worked as an assistant
to Ira Gershwin for seven years. He
is now known as the “Ambassador of
the American Songbook,” and rightfully
so: he actually started a foundation to
educate young musicians in the genre.
This concert, aptly titled “The Crooners,”
is a salute to legendary vocalists Bing
Crosby, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and
others. Tickets are $63, $83, and $103.
