West Indies fast bowler, Kemar Roach
got his name into West Indies cricket history
when he overtook legendary Sir Gary
Sobers — Barbados’ most revered living
National Hero — on the all-time list is West
Indies wicket-takers in Tests and assumed
the seventh spot with 237 wickets.
He accomplished the feat at his home
venue — Kensington Oval — where he
picked up two for 68 in the second Test
against England last Thursday.
Roach overtook Sir Gary when he
claimed his first wicket of the innings,
captain Joe Root for 153 in the second over
after launch-LBW to a delivery.
“It feels good. Obviously to pass a legend
like Sir Gary is a fantastic achievement.
It’s good to be among the greats. To write
my name on the wall above Sir Gary when
it comes to wickets is a fantastic achievement,”
the 33-year-old told reporters.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) Director of
Cricket, Jimmy Adams is expressing concern
that grassroots cricket in the region
is under threat.
He said administrators are desperately
trying to regain momentum to preserve and
nurture current and future talent and that
there is a particular need to identify and
develop female talent in the sport. Speaking
at a news conference where he discussed
the recent launch of the CWI Emerging
Players Academy in Antigua which is aimed
at supporting the development of world
class players from the Caribbean.
Adams said while there is raw talent
across CWI territories, “if we don’t protect
our grassroots cricket, then we might
not be saying that in 10 years time.” “Our
grassroots cricket is under attack at the
moment. We’re trying desperately to work
with governments across the region to
ensure we don’t lose that base that we’ve
had and that we depend on going forward,”
he said.

and Tobago Knight Riders (TKR), with
the teams set to showcase the best female
cricketers from the Caribbean, with overseas
stars complementing the teams.
CWI President Ricky Skerrit said the
initative falls in line with one of CWI’s strategic
priorities for West Indian women and
girls to get involved in the sport.
“We are delighted that we have been
able to partner with CPL to further the
expansion plans that we had first unveiled
in 2019 prior to the arrival of the COVID-19
pandemic” he said.
CPL’s CEO Pete Russell said that on the
heels of a successful Women’s T10 Challenge
that took place during the 2019 CPL,
tournament organizers were looking forward
to the next step with the WCPL.
The women’s tournament will take
place during the men’s event inside the
2022 Hero CPL tournament window which
will run from Aug. 30 to Sept. 30.
The 10th edition will be played across
five moe countries this year, with three
Caribbean countries selected for the group
stages and the fourth venue being chosen
for the finals.
“Right now, the risk is low and as such,
we adjust accordingly. This is in fact a victory
for the people of Grenada as it is their
behavior and adherence to protocols that
have helped to keep the COVID-19 risk at
relatively low level,” Steele said, adding
that “just as we celebrate this victory, we
hope to celebrate a West Indies win in
Grenada.”
The final Test will be from March
24-28 at the National Stadium in the
capital St. George.
This marks the first time since the
onset of the pandemic in March 2020 that
unvaccinated fans will be allowed entry to
a Cricket West Indies event in the region.
The opening Test in Antigua recently
and the second Test in Barbados were
both for vaccinated fans only.
The Barbados authorities had initially
set an 80 percent capacity for Kensington
Oval for the second Test but last week
raised that to full capacity for fully vaccinated
fans.

had serious work to do — and she did it.”
Bronze went to Poland, with European
champion Justyna Swiety-Ersetic anchoring
them to a time of 3:28.59, World Athletics
said.
It said the United States, who had
won this title on four of the five previous
occasions, were unable to make the
podium on this occasion, with Lynna
Irby bringing them home in fourth place
in 3:28.63.
Great Britain, into the final as nonautomatic
qualifiers, finished fifth in
3:29.82, ahead of Belgium, who clocked
3:33.61, World Athletics said.
