from a recount of all votes cast before
it announces a winner or decides that
there were enough instances of fraud
and irregularities to call for fresh elections.
The recount ended Sunday under
the watchful eyes of an observer team
from CARICOM. CARICOM’s report on
the credibility of the elections would be
key as both the incumbent Coalition
of former army general David Granger
and the main opposition People’s Progressive
Party (PPP) had agreed that
the team’s role would be important in
this aspect of the process.
The coalition wants the elections to
be annulled because it said its monitors
have found thousands of cases of
ballot stuffing, migrated people ticked
off as having voted, instances of ballot
boxes with only votes for the PPP in
them but without any supporting polling
documents such as the list of electors
and evidence of the PPP allegedly
stealing small amounts of votes from
each ballot box in all 10 electoral districts,
charges the party has denied.
Unofficial results with the alleged
anomalies show the PPP leading by

at least two parliamentary seats. The
coalition has threatened to head to
court to compel GECOM to invalidate
questionable votes as fears of unrest
depending on which outfit is declared
the winner lingers on.
Across the border Corentyne River
in Suriname, electoral officials have
recommended fresh elections be held
in two districts in the capital, Paramaribo,
to address irregularities but
there are indications that the recommendation
might be ignored as the
main opposition coalition grouping
has enough seats to form a government
and is only one shy of the 34 of
the 51 votes needed to elect a president.
Officials say that any adjustments to
the number of seats from a redo of the
two areas will still send the National
Democratic Party (NDP) to opposition
benches after 10 years in office and an
economy in tatters.
North of Guyana is Trinidad, the
twin-island federation with Tobago
is awaiting an announcement from
Prime Minister Keith Rowley about a
date for elections. Rowley’s PNM has 23
of the 41 seats. The remainder is held
by the United National Congress (UNC)
of former PM Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
Both parties have in recent days
been screening candidates ahead of the
announcement of a date. Rowley has
already signaled that parliament would
be dissolved sometime in July, meaning
elections could be in September
or October.
Other elections slated for this year
are scheduled in Belize and St. Vincent,
which has already said theirs
would be held by Christmas.
Rowley’s administration remains
bogged down by runaway violent
crime, which gave the island nation of
1.3 million people somewhat of a break
during the daytime partial lockdown
and nighttime curfew linked to the
COVID-19 pandemic. Other issues will
certainly include problems in the lifeline
energy sector where daily output
has fallen to about 70,000 barrels per
day as well as problems restarting the
major Petrotrin Refinery, which had
supplied much of Trinidad’s neighbors
with oil and petroleum products until
its closure a year ago.
