NYC Smoke Free
Faith Based Organizations
are an integral
part of the Bronx
Community and at NYC
Smoke-Free we are actively
seeking groups
in this sector to spread
the word about how tobacco
affects our brethren’s
health. Recently, I
attended a meeting with
many FBOs/churches
and it was great to be
a part of it because we
were discussing how
we can make the Bronx
a healthier county. The
Bronx is unfortunately
the unhealthiest county
in New York State, making
it 62 out 62.
The focus of the conversation
was as follows:
what can be done
by FBOs/churches and
other key stake holders
to create a dent and
change that unfortunate
statistic that has plague
the Bronx community for
years. I was energized by
the meeting and the great
ideas, strategies and tactics
that were discussed.
The passion in the room
on how to help Bronxites’
health was palpable. Tobacco,
being the number
#1 cause of preventable
death in New York was
clearly part of the conversation.
Bottom line: We can’t
move the needle when it
comes to the Bronx being
62 out of 62 unless
we address tobacco use
and preventing youth
from starting the deadly
habit. To that end, we are
looking forward to working
with as many faithbased
organizations/
churches as possible to
help make the Bronx a
healthier place where
people live, work, play
and pray.
We are asking Faith
Based Organizations/
churches who are interested
in collaborating
with us to reach out so
we can work together.
