Preston HS senior named
Peter M. Flanigan Scholar
Angelica Chavez-Downes, a Preston
High School senior, was one of
four high-school students to receive
the Peter M. Flanigan Scholarship.
High school seniors with a cumulative
GPA of 90 or above are invited to
apply to receive scholarship funding
of up to $10,000 a year for four years at
college. Upon graduation from Preston,
Chavez-Downes plans to attend
a 4-year university to receive a bachelor’s
degree in nursing with a minor
in business and spend a year as
a travel nurse, all steps towards completing
a personal goal of opening a
worldwide nursing facility. Chavez-
Downes holds a number of leadership
positions at Preston, including but
not limited to: captain of the Varsity
Cheerleading Team, vice president of
the DEI Task Force, president of the
Photography Club and Art Club, treasurer
of the Italian Honor Society,
and secretary of the Women Empowerment
Club.

DCWP visits Williamsbridge
to assess storm damage
On Thursday, Sept. 30, the NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection
(DCWP) went door to door in the Williamsbridge section of the Bronx,
speaking with homeowners who were affected by Hurricane Ida. DCWP shared
tips when hiring contractors for home repairs and urged homeowners to fi le
complaints if they experience problems with a contractor, such as price gouging.
On Oct. 2, Kingsbridge Heights
Community Center celebrated local
artists. The highlight was the work
of the artist known as Base, a small
business owner in the community
and the creator of the mural, “The
NYC-Together We Rise Mural.” Base
spoke of his art and the inspiration
behind it. He talked about 9/11, mental
health, loving oneself and survivors.
Ana Rodriguez, a photographer,
documented the production of the
mural and the event. State Assemblyman
Jeffrey Dinowitz, City Councilman
Eric Dinowitz, City Council candidate
Pierina Sanchez, Melva Miller,
chief executive offi cer of Association
of a Better New York, and community
members came out to support the
work.
Other artistic works that were celebrated
were: “I Tried to write a Love
Letter with My Body” by Priyanka
Das; “The Tibbetts Estuary Tapestry”
by Ana De La Cueva and Matthew
López-Jensen; “Book Making:
Creating Art in the Time of Grief and
Loss” with Valerie Deas and KHCC
Garden Volunteering.
