BOWMAN HOSTS CAREER FAIR IN CO-OP CITY
On July 27, U.S. Rep. Jamaal Bowman hosted a career fair in Co-op City. Many attended,
went from table to table and collected an enormous amount of potential employment opportunities.
Tables also gave out bags, hand sanitizers, pens, pencils, fl yers and more to
participants. There was information for those facing eviction, senior citizen and disabled
homeowner’s exemption, health care, insurance, etc. This wasn’t just a career fair as much
as it was an opportunity to gain knowledge. Tables included representatives from The Hope
Program; The Edward J. Malloy Initiative For Construction Skills; Woodlawn Cemetery; Cooperative
Home Care Associates; Bronx Chambers Of Commerce; SoBro; FDNY; NYPD; U.S.
Postal Service; NYC Parks; NYC Mayor’s Public Engagement Unit; New York Public Library;
City Councilman Kevin Riley; Westchester County; The Children’s Village; state Assemblyman
Michael R. Benedetto; Bronx Works; NYC Veteran’s Services and more. It was estimated
that more than 300 people attended. Bowman said he was pleased and impressed by the
turnout and added that he plans on having more fairs in the future. -Jewel Webber

On Aug. 7, the north Bronx community joined in the annual Community Engagement Day
Unity Walk. The Unity Walk is partnered with Fun in the Son, who hosted a gospel concert
following the walk. The Community Engagement Day Unity Walk began at Gun Post Lanes
and ended at Evander Childs Football Field. The walk is a celebration that brings local residents,
organizations, churches and youth groups together. The Unity Walk is a celebration
that brings local residents, organizations, churches, and youth groups together. After being
cancelled last year due to COVID-19, this year’s Unity Walk was a great way to celebrate
community and family.
Bronx Community Board 10 distributed the New York Yankees Community Council Youth
Leadership awards to fi ve local youth leaders on Aug. 4. The board wanted to openly acknowledge
and honor these amazing young women. As they sat and conversed with Robert
L. Bieder, the NYPD’s 45th Precinct Community Council president, Matt Cruz, district manager
of Community Board 10, amongst others, you could see the quality and intelligence on
hand. There was so much support, encouragement, wisdom and connection in this setting.
The recipients of the New York Yankees Community Council Youth Leadership Awards were
Aleigha Adams, Christina Diaz, Kamilah Lepin, Yanely Cabrera and Ruebena Lebbeney-Bandar.
Adams plans to attend Mercy College for nursing; Cabrera plans to major in Business
Administration and Financing; Diaz plans to go into law, Criminal Justice and Forensics; Lepin
plans to have a double major in Political Science and Black American, Caribbean and Latino
Studies; and Lebbeney-Bandar was not in attendance. With such terrifi c young women,
the future of the Bronx is headed in a positive direction. -Jewel Webber
Members of the NYPD’s 41st Precinct and Auxiliary Unit presented “The Bronx Got Talent”
back to school showcase, on Aug. 8, allowing for a fun afternoon for all in attendance. The
day was fi lled with a free barbecue, raffl es and prizes, and performances from various
members of the community.
