There’s
Nothing
Like It!
BY ALEX MITCHELL
It was the only way. The
City Council voted to approve
renaming a University
Heights street after the
one and only beloved Marvel
comic creator whose fi lm cameos
were touching to many.
‘Stan Lee Way’ will be
coming to University Avenue
between Brandt Place and
West 176th Street next spring
thanks to the bill that Councilman
Fernando Cabrera proposed.
Before going on to sketch
Spiderman, Iron Man, Doctor
Strange, the Fantastic Four,
Nick Fury, J. Jonah Jameson
the prestigious Daily Bugle
newspaper in addition to
many other heroes and villains
alike, Lee called 1720
University Avenue home.
While his third fl oor, back
facing apartment may have
not been as snazzy as Avengers
Tower, it did the trick for
Lee during his stint at DeWitt
Clinton High School where he
still went by his birth name,
Stanley Martin Lieber.
He actually penned the
moniker out of fear that comic
books would tarnish his writing
reputation, ironically
enough.
Lee passed away at 95 on
Monday, November 12, 2018.
It was just months following
Marvel’s record-breaking
fi lm, ‘Avengers: Infi nity War,’
where Lee had a cameo as a
cynical school bus driver that
criticized Peter Parker’s classmates
for ‘overreacting’ to an
alien spaceship hovering over
midtown.
That fi lm’s sequel, ‘Avengers:
Endgame’ not only broke
the all time box offi ce record
this summer, but also contained
a posthumous cameo
from Lee playing a 70s hippie
that yells “Make love not
war!” while driving by Camp
Lehigh with an excelsior bumper
sticker on the hot rod.
Rest in peace Stan, we love
you 3000.
