 TO BUILD BACK OUR ECONOMY:
NEW YORK NEEDS A CONSTRUCTION CZAR
The COVID-19 pandemic put New York in
 $9.8 BILLION
an unprecedented economic crisis: IN LOST CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY
 IN WAGES
 JOBS
According to the New York State Comptroller Report, New York State had the highest loss of
construction jobs in the nation and the 44,400 jobs lost was the worst decline in 25 years with more than
half coming from New York City. Queens lost the most construction jobs (6,900) followed by Manhattan
(6,900), Brooklyn (5,600) the Bronx (1,600) and Staten Island (1,200).
Therefore, it is critical for the newly elected New York City Mayor to appoint a Deputy Mayor for
Rebuilding and Reconstruction. The Deputy Mayor of Rebuilding and Reconstruction will serve as the
 single point of contact to:
 Advance large projects that
 are too often delayed
The Building Trades Employers Association, in partnership with Rebuild Renew New York, published a
study that proves the unionized construction industry will serve as a catalyst in revitalizing New York’s
economy. The industry comprises 20% of the City’s GDP, provides 10% of its jobs and 5% of the city’s
 total wages.
The Deputy Mayor of Rebuilding and Reconstruction in coordination with unionized construction
industry, will build back New York and rebuild the physical and social infrastructure of our City for
 generations to come.
