BY COUNCILMAN
MARK GJONAJ
I am proud to have hosted
in the previous weeks and
hosting in the weeks coming,
a series of food and face
mask giveaways. Last week,
in partial honor of Nurses
National Week, and an indebtedness
our city and local
community has to frontline
medical personnel, I visited
Jacobi Medical Center to distribute
lunch and PPE to our
nurses and related medical
workers.
These giveaways, made
possible by much-appreciated
assistance from our
community organizations,
are being held throughout
neighborhoods in the district.
The outpouring of community
organization aid, including
FreshDirect, Marina
Del Rey, and various tenant,
civic and merchant associations
(although they are too
numerous to completely list,)
continues to affi rm my belief
in the Bronx’s unique resilience.
Community areas and
groups previously served include
Boston Road, P.S. 14,
Janel Towers, Holland Avenue
in Pelham Parkway,
Country Club and Pelham
Bay, to name a few visited in
just the past week.
My offi ce, in conjunction
with our community
partners, will continue to
reach as many areas as possible
in our district. We have
several food and face mask
giveaways on the horizon,
extending practically indefi -
nitely, or at least until this
crisis has been abated.
To receive information
about upcoming food and
mask giveaways in your
neighborhood I invite you
to follow me on social media
(Facebook, Twitter, & Instagram)
or contact my district
offi ce at either 718-931-1721 or
at MGjonaj@council.nyc.gov.
A constituent services representative
is happy to provide
you with the information
you need to ensure that you
continue to remain nourished
and protected during
this crisis.
I thank you for your commitment
to responsible social
distancing and quarantine
practices as we continue
to manage COVID-19. We
cannot overstate enough the
effect that seemingly insignifi
cant individual behaviors
have on pandemic management,
and although NYC
is set to begin a gradual process
of reopening, I ask that
you continue to adhere to
the greatest extent possible
these newly-acquired health
practices. We will make it
through this.
LET US HEAR FROM YOU

Dear letters editor,
Today’s Congressional
generation could learn much
from the late Idaho Republican
Senator James A Mc-
Clure. For 18 years, he read
every word of every bill before
voting on it. Members of
Congress will have to take an
Evelyn Wood speed reading
class to absorb the 1200 pages
contained in Democratic
Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (cosponsored
by Senate Minority
Leader Chuck Schumer)
$3 trillion COVID-19 stimulus
bill.
Only lobbyists and key
Congressional staff members
(employed by the House
and Senate leadership teams)
who actually wrote the
fi ne print on behalf of their
bosses have any idea of the
details buried in the actual
contents. There should be a
two week minimum time out
period. This would provide
adequate time for members
of Congress, ordinary citizens,
the media and independent
good government watchdog
groups the opportunity
to understand all of the contents
contained in this legislation.
Everyone would also have
the option under an open process
to comment and discuss
the benefi ts or consequences
before others vote up or down
for adoption. Congress could
hold a series of public hearings
in the light of day instead
of meeting in the back
room of Speaker Pelosi’s offi
ce.
If we print more money to
pay for this, we run the risk
of runaway infl ation. We
can’t count on tax revenue to
cover this and don’t want to
borrow money to pay for it.
The only nation that could
lend us the money is China,
which is why we are in this
bind in the fi rst place.
Sincerely,
Larry Penner
