WE WILL WORK AND GET THROUGH THIS TOGETHER!
Morris Park Business Improvement District
BRONX TIMES R BTR EPORTER, MAY 8-14, 2020 43
Serving the Morris Park Avenue Commercial Corridor and the Community
Established by the City of New York in April 2018, the Morris Park BID is proudly
celebrating this spring a year of independent operation serving the Morris Park
Avenue commercial corridor. The Morris Park BID is the 75th BID in New York City
and the 10th BID in the Bronx. BID operations are funded through an assessment
on commercial property owners on Morris Park Avenue, between Unionport
Rd/Amethyst St and Williamsbridge Rd. Our work, by law, is focused on 4
program areas - supplementary sanitation (7 hours/day, 7 days/week);
beautification, safety and district marketing. We are also supporting small
businesses in liaising with NYC agencies, accessing resources and advocating for
a clean and thriving commercial corridor on Morris Park Avenue.
A dedicated group of elected Board Members consisting of property owners,
commercial tenants, residents and elected officials is overseeing the BID
operations, coordinated from our office at 966 Morris Park Avenue.
With only one year of independent operations, the Morris Park BID already
accomplished a lot. We formally approved by-laws at our first Annual Meeting,
obtained 501c3 non-profit status, completed NY State and NY City Council
contracts, for which we thank Councilman Mark Gjonaj and Assembly Member
Michael Benedetto. We established the BID as a strong and reliable economic
development partner in East Bronx, effective, results oriented and operating
professionally, with transparency and accountability. We are also proud of
working very closely with the community through events including Mother’s Day,
Graduation Day, summer events in Loreto Park. We planted daffodils, organized
music evenings, brought a holiday trolley for the first time in Morris Park, and
assisted our businesses to receive much deserved recognition and awards for the
quality of their service.
In the current circumstances, the Morris Park BID played a critical role in
connecting businesses to financial assistance, grants and loans. As a result of our
prompt action and direct work with business owners, most merchants were able
to receive and benefit from financial assistance allowing their businesses to
continue serving the Morris Park area and the Bronx. In May we will start a
“Masks by Mail” program providing face coverings to the residents in zips 10461
and 10462.
Morris Park businesses have deep roots in the community. We are fully
confident in the resilience of the Morris Park commercial corridor!
We will be here every step of the way helping businesses being successful and
serving the community for many years to come. Morris Park is the village in the
heart of the Bronx, it is the largest job center of the borough, and will continue
to prosper and thrive, along with this wonderful community.
More than ever we want to express our gratitude to you - Morris Park residents
– and to all businesses and elected officials supporting our work. Thank You!
Morris Park Executive Director, Dr. Camelia Tepelus
