Celebrating Nurses Week 2020
Nurses Week 2020 has been designated the “Year Of The Nurse” to commemorate the 200th
birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. During this very special
week, we would like to recognize and thank all of our nurses who have risen to the
challenges as we battle COVID-19.
The events that have occurred in our
community, our country and our world
during the past several months are
unprecedented in public health and
led to an international response of all
healthcare professionals to work
tirelessly to care for hundreds of
thousands of individuals with this
new and deadly viral illness, and to
collaborate in ways that many have
not seen before.
At North Central Bronx, new ICU and
Medical Units were established, staff
quickly learned new skills and became
part of newly formed teams responding
to the needs of this hard hit epicenter.
It has been a difficult few
months, with long work hours,
sadness from the virulence of
this disease, battles lost and
lives taken too soon. But there
have been happier times as
well, celebrations of patients
who have been successfully
extubated, patients who have
been discharged home.
We also celebrate the
resilience, dedication and
compassion of our nurses—and
to them we are truly grateful.
Sincerely,
Cristina Contreras, ED
