The New Bronx Chamber of Commerce Announces 15th
Annual Women Of Distinction Scholarship Awards
The New Bronx Chamber of Commerce
is once again awarding partial college
scholarships to high-achieving female
Bronx students as part of its annual Women’s
History Month Women of Distinction
event series, now in its 15 th year. This
year’s event — themed Valiant Women
of the Vote: We Will Not Be Silenced —
will take place on Friday, March 26 starting
at 11:30am on Zoom, honoring Hazel
N. Dukes, President of the NAACP New
York State Conference. Meisha Ross Porter,
Bronx Executive Superintendent and
newly-appointed Chancellor of the NYC Department
of Education, will serve as Keynote
Speaker.
Bronx Chamber President Lisa Sorin
said, “While we are disappointed to again
not be able to gather in person to celebrate
our honoree & scholarship recipients
and recognize our Chamber member sponsors,
we are thrilled to be able to award partial
scholarship funds to 21 accomplished
female students from high schools around
the Bronx – a new record for our scholarship
program.”
By creating opportunities for businesses
to partner with educational institutions
to provide scholarships for academically
gifted young women, the Bronx
Chamber is addressing critical education
funding needs and empowering youth to
succeed and contribute to their Bronx communities.
Scholarship recipients are graduating
seniors attending public, private, and
charter high schools around the Bronx.
Scholarships were made possible
through the generosity of the following
sponsors: Ponce Bank, The Metro Optics
Group, Con Edison, Sandra Erickson Real
Estate, The Monroe Foundation, Woodlawn
Cemetery, Simone Development,
Manhattan Parking Group, Orange Bank
& Trust, KZA Realty, Verizon, NYC

BY THE EAST BRONX HISTORY FORUM
The East Bronx History Forum and the Huntington Free Library are pleased to
announce the Forum will hold its 154th meeting on Wednesday, April 21th at 8:00 PM
with a ZOOM presentation by Author and Tour Guide Kevin C. Fitzpatrick. Mr. Fitzpatrick’s
presentation will cover his book “111 Places in the Bronx That You Must
Not Miss”.
I have joked that Kevin Fitzpatrick’s book 111 Places in the Bronx That You Must
Not Miss should be titled 111 Places in the Bronx To See Before You Die, until I found
out that there are many world-wide travel books that contain 111 color images of
places of interest. There are books for all the boroughs except Staten Island, which
has not yet made the cut.
The book is a fun and interesting read, and the photographs are inviting, but
the best is to visit the many places from the guide. The book is perfect for residents,
since it would take time to plan to see it all. The varied topics contain places and
subjects that even life long Bronx residents would be surprised to have missed. Not
missed, is the history forum favorite – The Battle of Westchester Creek and the Abandoned
Railway lines. Personal favorites include Bronx breweries, watering spots,
pastry and food shops. Historic houses and sites north, south east and west from Bartow
Pell to St. Ann’s. All is covered from celebrities to crime to ghosts.
Kevin Fitzpatrick is an award-winning author and editor of eight books that are
all tied to New York City history. His previous book was World War One New York: A
Guide to the City’s Enduring Ties to the Great War. Kevin is also the program director
for the World War One Centennial Committee for New York City. Mr. Fitzpatrick is
a licensed NYC sightseeing guide for 20 years, and a three-time winner of the Apple
Award from the Guides Association for New York City. He is also a tour guide who
leads history tours for the Woodlawn Cemetery and Conservancy. Kevin and his
family live on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
Zoom in and fi nd out what subjects made the book and a special discount for members.
This Presentation is limited to the fi rst 100 members and friends that log onto
our Zoom meeting. The East Bronx History Forum posts the login details on our
web page at BronxNYC.com. Remember, we will meet on-line, at 8:00 pm, Wednesday
April 21st.
