Small businesses are the backbone of our
communities, creating jobs, generating tax revenue
I ask all small business
owners and residents to
join me, NYC Councilman
Mark Gjonaj, as I
call on the Mayor, Governor
and the Federal
Government to take the
necessary measures to
save the local business
sector. Social distancing
efforts, while necessary,
have harmed small businesses.
Many businesses
have been mandated to
shut down, and of the few
remaining, consumer
activity and sales have
fallen dramatically. Join
me to ensure that small
businesses have the cash
fl exibility to weather this
storm.
Specifi cally, we call on
the city, the state, and the
federal government to delay
the payments of:
- business income tax
- real estate tax (including
BID and commercial
tax assessments)
- payroll tax
- water and sewage
and providing valuable services.
charges
- workers’ compensation
and disability insurance
And negotiate with:
- utility companies to delay
payments
- banks to delay payments
on mortgages and
loans
- insurance companies to
ensure they honor business
interruption claims
- landlords to be fl exible
with their tenants regarding
rent payments
And fi nally to:
- suspend “Fair Workweek
Law” predictive
scheduling requirements
for employers in NYC
- convene a task force of
independently owned
small businesses, government
agencies, and
elected offi cials to be proactive
in examining the
needs and response to
small business
These measures will
ensure that small businesses
have the cash
reserves to stay afl oat.
BRONX TIMES R 4 EPORTER, MARCH 20-26, 2020 BTR
This pandemic has the
potential to be the worst
economic crisis we have
ever experienced in our
lifetime.
I want the government,
at all levels, to quickly
work with the appropriate
parties to develop grants
and zero-interest loans
for small businesses. This
will cushion the blow
of these major revenue
losses. I also call on the
Governor and the Mayor
to communicate clearly
how business regulations
and mandates have been
changed during this time
of crisis, and how they
can access legal services.
Businesses must be given
ample time to adjust and
create a business model
during these changing
and uncertain times.
Saving small business
will save our city, our
state, and our country!
