Car thefts are plaguing
this country and the
South Bronx is not an
exception. From January
2021 to January
2022, grand larceny auto
spiked 287% within the
42nd Precinct.
On Feb. 24, the 42nd
Precinct Community
Council held its monthly
meeting where Capt.
Sean Tablante discussed
the crime stats from Jan.
24 to Feb. 20.
Car thefts are not only
hounding NYC, with a
91% uptick from January
2021 to January 2022, but
places like Chicago had
more than 1,900 carjackings
last year and Philadelphia
has already seen
140 this year, double the
total from 2021.
“This is a problem
citywide, especially here
in the South Bronx,”
Tablante said. “It takes a
minute for a vehicle to be
stolen if you leave it unattended.
We really just
want to try and get it out
there to take that extra
fi ve minutes and fi nd a
parking spot.”
Tablante said 13 of
the 14 victims of car theft
have left their vehicles
running and unattended.
According to
Tablante, most of the incidents
have been in commercial
districts like
Southern Boulevard and
Third Avenue. Also, police
believe the crimes

are not being committed
by the same people.
To curb these thefts,
offi cers have set up check
points looking for stolen
cars.
“It shows we are out
there and will hopefully
deter these guys from
taking cars,” the captain
said.
Burglaries have also
increased from January
2021 to January 2022
from 7 to 17 and are up
81% for the year. With six
of the incidents at commercial
buildings, the
precinct is deploying offi
cers to commercial districts
along Boston Road,
Southern Boulevard and
Third Avenue.
On a positive note, the
42nd Precinct has not had
one homicide this year,
only one shooting in the
past 28 days, has taken
nine illegal guns off the
street this year and made
six gun arrests.
“I understand two
shooting incidents for the
year is two too many, but
comparing us to other areas
where they see a lot of
violence, I say we are off
to a good start,” Tablante
said.
