This past Saturday,
July 27, Good Shepherd
Services’ Bronx Rises
Against Gun Violence
(B.R.A.G.) program
hosted a ‘Peace Circle’
event at St. James Park
to spread the message of
peace in one of the Bronx’
most vulnerable neighborhoods.
An annual summer
series, the Peace Circles
bring community members
together in a celebration
of unity and
non-violence to foster an
environment free of the
fear of gun violence.
Peace Circle attendees
enjoyed a delicious afternoon
barbeque, lively
music, and fun family
and children’s activities
for all.
Saturday’s event
marked B.R.A.G North
West’s inaugural Peace
Circle following the program’s
expansion into
the northwest neighborhood
in July 2018.
“B.R.A.G. is laying
the ground work to make
sure children in the
Bronx can grow up free of
the fear of gun violence,”
said Sister Paulette Lo-
Monaco, executive director
of Good Shepherd Services.
“We hope that the
Bronx families who took
part in Saturday’s Peace
Circle feel empowered,
unifi ed, and supported in
the common goal of making
our communities
safer by coming together
as neighbors.”
As one of the largest
providers of youth services
in New York City,
Good Shepherd Services
serves over 30,000 chil-
dren and families each
year operating an array
of youth and family programming
in the Bronx,
including the B.R.A.G.
programs. B.R.A.G.
works with young people,
local community residents,
community organizations,
and the public
to promote safer streets
and new community
norms where violence is
not accepted. Program
staff help reduce gun
violence by identifying
youth at risk for retaliatory
violence, working
with victims and their
families and friends to
help prevent future violence,
and providing
linkages to resources
and follow-up services
to patient participants.
B.R.A.G. recently opened
a recording studio for
Bronx youth to keep kids
off the streets and celebrated
the milestone of
one year without gun violence
in one of its Bronx
communities.
Good Shepherd Services
goes where children,
youth, and families
face the greatest
challenges and provides
resources that build on
their inherent strengths
to help them thrive.
Good Shepherd operates
over 80 programs, which
help nearly 30,000 youth
and family members in
struggling neighborhoods
throughout New
York City. All programs
are united by a common
goal—to create opportunities
that help our
participants succeed at
school, at home, and in
their community.
