MARCH TO END GUN VIOLENCE
National Gun Violence Awareness Day, Friday, June 4, commenced in spite of the wind and outpouring of rain. It eventually stopped raining and there were amazing people like Basil Moore,
president of 46th Precinct Community Council, who urged attendees that “If you have someone in your house with a gun, don’t snitch. Tell on them.” Brenda Caldwell-Paris, president of
the 52nd Precinct Community Council, told attendees, “We are just tired. Tired of our babies getting killed. Just tired!” There were also tables at this event that provided resources in
education, jobs, etc…, and Lil Lex (Alexis) performed her song “Covid Killer.

From Councilman Mark Gjonaj
The Council District
13’s weekend was a complete
success, due in no
small part to my attentive
and committed constituent
services team.
Towards the end of last
week, Team Gjonaj
stopped by the RAIN Middletown
Senior Center to
refi ll its hand sanitizer
stations in anticipation
of senior centers reopening
for activities on the
quickly-upcoming 14th.
We want to take every
step possible to protect
our seniors! The same
day I joined fellow Bronx
representatives, including
several members of
Congress, in support of
the Stand Up to Violence
program at Council District
13’s very own Jacobi
Hospital. This outreach
program has seen tremendous
success in combatting
violence experienced
by youth.
On Friday we capped
off the week with the fi rst
of my perennial Summer
Concert Series, beginning
with Just Nuts, a
local act, performing at
7pm at Buffano Park. I
was encouraged to see
such great (and sociallydistanced)
attendance.
Photos of the gathering
can be seen on my social
media. My team and I
look forward to the rest
of the Summer Concert
Series.
Come Saturday, we
had our latest pet food
giveaway; this time at 475
Swinton Avenue. District
residents were welcome
to swing buy, introduce
their furry friends if they
wish, and pick up dry cat
and dog food, completely
free of charge. The double
feature of this event
was the free shredding
offering, allowing those
interested to securely
dispose of their confi dential
documents.
Sunday wrapped up
the eventful weekend,
fortuitously accompanied
by near-perfect latespring
weather, with our
street co-naming commemorating
the late Joe
DeSimone—local high
school and youth football
legend. Our community
misses you dearly Mr.
DeSimone.
