BY THOMAS X. CASEY
The East Bronx History Forum
and the Huntington Free Library announces
the forum will hold its 155th
meeting on Wednesday, May 19, at 8
p.m. with a Zoom presentation by author
and librarian, Professor Janet Butler
Munch. Munch’s presentation will
cover her recent article and research
Community Building at Amalgamated
Housing co-operative. Munch’s
article was published in the 2020
Bronx County Historical Society Journal.
Past publication was Bronx Faces
and Voices: Sixteen Stories of Courage
and Community. In this book, 16 men
and women tell their personal, uncensored
stories of the Bronx, before, during,
and after the troubled years of arson,
crime, abandonment, and fl ight in
the 1970s and 1980s.
Munch is a professor and special collections
librarian at Lehman College,
CUNY. For the past 20 years she has
worked with Bronx researchers and
collections including Lehman’s Bronx
Institute Archives of community oral
histories, books, documents, maps, and
photographs. The institute at Lehman
conducted more than 400 interviews
with Bronx adults, including such local
notables as the late historian, Rev. William
Tieck. Some of this work contributed
to the Amalgamated story.
The Amalgamated Housing co- operative
got its start from the Jewish labor
movement and the Amalgamated
Clothing Workers Union in 1925. NYS
Housing Act of 1926 gave Amalgamated
their legal footing and groundbreaking
was held Thanksgiving Day 1926. The
fi rst co-operators moved in November
1, 1927 and the complex is going strong
almost 100years later.
Zoom in and fi nd out how the Amalgamated
survived and the changes that
took place from the voices that lived
there. This presentation is limited to
the fi rst 100 members and friends that
log onto the Zoom meeting. The East
Bronx History Forum posts the login
details on its web page at BronxNYC.
