Bronx Hibernians fund needy
through local Catholic Churches
BY BRONX TIMES
The East Bronx Hibernians
have announced that they have
allocated $3,000 from their
treasury which will be made
available to the needy of various
East Bronx Catholic parishes
thru local pastors, stated
President Roger Fahey.
“My Brothers in Division
3 join me in responding to the
COVID-19 virus and resulting
unemployment by providing
these funds so that we can assist
our parishes’ food pantries
and other direct food distributions”
said Fahey, a retired
Court Clerk.
The Ancient Order of Hibernians
is an Irish-Catholic
fraternal order originally
founded in 1836 in New York
to protect Roman Catholic
Churches from constant attack
by the Know Nothings. Their
motto is Unity, Friendship
and Christian Charity. East
Bronx division 3 was founded
in 1867 and the first Vice President
was Owen Dolan, who
had park named after him in
Westchester Square.
The following Catholic parishes
have been awarded $500
each:
St. Clare of Assisi
St. Benedict
St. Frances de Chantal
Our Lady of Assumption
St. Theresa
St. Lucy
Some of the parishes listed
above have graciously suggested
the donation be given to
more needy churches or nursing
facilities.
“As the Chaplain of Division
3 I am always so proud of
the Hibernians and the generous
ways they help so many
but especially during this time
of COVID-19. I am grateful to
my Hibernian brothers for
giving $500 to St Benedict’s as
well as to the other parishes in
the Bronx because we are able
to purchase gift cards at local
supermarkets for people struggling

during this pandemic.
These gift cards help many
families thanks to the Hibernians.”
Fr Stephen Norton,
pastor at St. Benedict.
Since 2011, Division 3 has
awarded at graduation $20,000
to 68 graduates of Catholic
schools the funds used to reduce
the cost of high school tuition.
The Commodore Barry
medal and stipend has also
been awarded at graduation
to a student who excelled in
American History at 6 schools.
Also, a different student at
St. Raymond’s Gaelic Football
Club has been awarded
$500 each Spring for almost 20
years. The Division has suspended
these awards for this
year due to funding needs to
combat the virus and resulting
food needs.
Bob Nolan, District #4 Director
and past Division president
noted, “Our Hibernian
motto is Unity, Friendship
and Christian Charity and
the funding of this new initiative
is an outstanding example
of leadership by my Brothers
during these difficult times.”
Past Division President Joseph
McManus stated, ”Our
Brothers have a history of being
extremely generous and responsive
to community needs.
I salute them.”
The Division has sponsored
golf outings, dinners and sold
raffles for a basket of cheer to
raise funds which have been
awarded to dozens of local organizations.
