Birch Family Services Pelham Bay celebrated Black History Month by celebrating
and studying Black inventors. The children learned about George
Crum, the man credited with creating the potato chip; Mark Dean, who developed
many computer items for IBM; Lewis Howard, who received a patent for
improvements to the electric light; Garrett Morgan, the inventor of the standard
traffi c light, and many others. The culmination was Inventors Day -- each
class presented a hallway activity about their inventor. Children were able to
taste various potato chips, participate in TEAMs computer activities, and use
an electric lamp.
