Bronx residents were struggling
before the pandemic and
now things are only worse.
People are hurting and wondering
where their next meal
will come from or if they will
be evicted.
As these people are suffering,
the wealthy in New
York City have become richer.
Elected offi cials have taken
notice and are furious. They
are calling on Governor Andrew
Cuomo to tax the billionaires
and make them pay
their fair share, but so far he
has not budged.
Representatives Alexandria
Ocasio-Cortez and Jamaal
Bowman and Senators Alessandra
Biaggi and Gustavo Rivera
are among the lawmakers
championing for “Invest
in Our New York Act,” a legislative
package to recover from
economic crisis & rebuild New
York by raising at least $50 billion
through taxes on wealthy.
If passed, this would represent
single largest measure taken
to close New York’s inequality
gap in decades.
On Jan. 28, the pols were
joined by their colleagues and
activists outside of JCC of Pelham
Parkway Food Pantry
where for the past year lines
have stretched around the
block. The Bronx elected offi -
cials join dozens of state legislators
and over 120 labor and
community organizations
across New York in supporting
the legislative package.
“The Bronx faces the highest
unemployment rate in the
entire state of New York,”
Biaggi exclaimed. “We have
to raise revenue to stop our
fi nancial crisis. New Yorkers
are counting on us. They need
to survive.”
The senator noted that in
the past Democratic and Republican
governors raised revenue,
but Cuomo refuses to.
AOC was fi red up and
shared her colleague’s passion.

“It’s really not complicated,
even before COVID they were
not paying their fair share,”
she said. “We should not have
to settle for a crumbling subway
system. We shouldnot
have to settle for a crumbling
infrastructure and schools
that don’t have resources.
She noted that Congress
will also demand $15 million
from the federal government
to help the struggling New
York economy.
“What we are asking is the
billionaires do their part to be
part of our community,” she
stressed.
