This week’s As Stated
presents commentaries on
this recent collapse of a wind
turbine at 500 Baychester Avenue
and the shooting of two
NYCHA employees at Fort Independence
Houses.
State Senator Jamaal T.
Bailey’s statement on the collapse
of wind turbine at 500
Baychester Avenue..... “The
events that occurred on 500
Baychester Avenue in Co-op
City are a reminder that we
can not allow any type of building
structure be put up so hastily,
and that the Department
of Buildings needs to properly
inspect these structures prior
to it’s assembly.
“There are many yet unanswered
questions about the
permission to build and the
stability of a structure that
was put up quite literally as
residents of Co-op City slept,
and we continue to investigate
this matter.
“We are lucky that there
were no injuries from the collapse
of the wind turbine and
the only damage, while unfortunate,
was property damage.
We are even luckier that this
was not a day where school
was in session, as there are
multiple schools on Baychester
Avenue and the injuries could
have been devastating.
“My offi ce will continue to
monitor this situation, and I
hope that the owner of this turbine
realizes that Co-op City is
no place for this type of structure.
Simply because one believes
they can do something,
COUNCILMAN FERNANDO CABRERA
they shouldn’t always do so.
This serves as a reminder for
that.”
Councilman Fernando
Cabrera’s statement on a
shooting at Fort Independence
Houses..... “(The recent) shooting
at Fort Independence
Houses involving two NYCHA
employees is yet another reminder
that we need more effective
gun control measures
and double down on our efforts
to end gun violence. I’m
thankful that no tenants were
harmed and have reached out
to the tenants association leadership
to provide assistance
from my offi ce as needed. I offer
my prayers and best wishes
to the injured employee for a
rapid and complete recovery
from injuries sustained in the
incident.”
A 29-year old man was discovered unconscious and unresponsive with gunshot wounds to the head
and neck at 1609 E. 174th Street within the Bronx River Houses on New Year’s Day at around 10:30 a.m.
The individual, later identifi ed as Raheem Jennings, was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS. Police
say that Jennings’ girlfriend was taken into custody for questioning following the shooting. This is
reportedly the fi rst homicide of the year.
Dear editor,
Merry Christmas, and
happy new year, America!
Aren’t we all so happy that
during November, the month
of Thanksgiving, and December,
the month of awaiting
peace and light to come
into the world, the Democratic
party chose to drag us
through their muck and mire
of impeaching our President?
It added so much to our holiday
festivities.
My family is not politically
correct. We stand and
salute our fl ag, kneel and pray
before the cross, say ‘Merry
Christmas’ and proudly sing
‘God Bless America’ with Kate
Smith. Grow up, people.
