Confusion as Cuomo, de Blasio scramble

Schools and non-essential
business have closed in large
swaths of central and southern
Brooklyn after a substantial
uptick in coronavirus cases
sent elected offi cials scrambling
for a response plan —
and locals searching for clarity
amid the confusion.
“We need to address this
rigorously and quickly, and
the faster we address it all together,
the faster we can stop
this problem and get back on
the right track,” Mayor Bill de
Blasio said at an Oct. 7 press
conference. “I’m not here to
tell you it’ll be easy. It will
take hard work and discipline.
And, certainly, there will be
sacrifi ce.”
The chaotic series of proclamations
began when Mayor
Bill de Blasio announced public
and private school closures
that were set to begin on Oct.
7 in six Brooklyn ZIP codes
— 11219, 11223, 11230, 11204,
11210, 11229.
Along with closing educational
institutions, de Blasio
planned to shutter non-essential
businesses in those ZIP
codes, which were singled
out because they had seen an
above-three percent positivity
rate of COVID-19 tests for over
seven consecutive days.
Those plans were later
one-upped when Gov. Andrew
