In 1987, a gallon of gas
was 89 cents, and postage
stamps were 24 cents. The
Final Fantasy video game
was released; Full House
and The Simpsons premiered
on TV for the first
time, and Aretha Franklin
was inducted into the
Rock and Roll of Fame.
Fox Broadcasting made its
prime-time TV debut, and
Margaret Thatcher was
elected as Prime Minister
of the UK for the third
time. Fatal Attraction, The
Untouchables, and Moonstruck
were in theaters,
George Michael’s “Faith”
was on the billboard charts,
and Peter Cohen entered
the gates of Kingsborough
Community College.
He started as a substitute
teacher in the Department
of Student Development.
Throughout his time
at KCC, he was promoted
and appointed to various
positions, including dean,
interim president of the
College, and vice president
of Student Affairs. Despite
the variety of titles, Peter’s
job has stayed the same for
33 years: supporting students
to be successful in
achieving their goals.
Peter’s legacy of service
to KCC is evident in
the spectrum of services
that continue to support
students, such as the KCC
Child Development Center,
the Office of Student Life,
the Access Resource Center,
KCC’s Access-Ability
Services and our Counseling
Services which has
been rebranded and is now
called Student Wellness
Services and includes Student
Counseling, Health
Services, Wellness Center,
and the Women’s Center.
Fortunately for us, in
those years, he also was responsible
for hiring many
of our outstanding student
affairs and support staff
who continue to demonstrate
a commitment to student
success that matches
his own. Because of the
influence of Peter and so
many others and the welcoming
and supportive environment
that he helped
to develop, KCC continues
to be a college known for its
high-touch approach and
comprehensive approach
to assisting students.
Congratulations to Vice
President Peter Cohen on
his retirement! His legacy
of supporting students will
forever be embedded in
the halls of Kingsborough
Community College.
