Astoria’s Amanda Jarufe first started writing
music at 8 years old, though she didn’t begin
to pursue music as a career until she moved
to New York City in 2014. She said that her
music talks about her struggles, inspirations
and triumphs, and that she writes “for myself
and others to find healing.” One of her songs,
“Dark Room,” was actually the result of an assignment
from her therapist to verbalize her
feelings of depression. She also does covers
of some of her favorite artists, like Sara Bareilles
and Kacey Musgraves.
Her music can be found on Instagram and
music streaming services. You can find her
playing at venues such as 54 Below.
“As a half Brazilian and half Palestinian
woman, Astoria is the first place that has felt
like home to me,” she said. “I love creating and
performing here because I feel welcomed
and embraced here.”

@JONNYMEYERS.MUSIC
Jonny Meyers, a Jackson Heights resident who often plays in Astoria, Long
Island City and Sunnyside, first started performing in a ‘90s rock cover band in
college. His music, as he said a friend described it, is a “comfort food dish of
American music” — a unique mixture of rock, soul, country and blues. Songs touch
on the topics of love, friendship and the experience of living in New York City.
You can watch Meyers perform his original songs and some covers at venues
around the city and upstate New York, including The LIC Bar, ICONYC Brewery
and SingleCut in western Queens. He and his band, The JMQ, released a new
album on Nov. 2. It’s titled “The Moment You Arrive” and is available on all music
streaming and downloading platforms.
