Legends
OF ASTORIA
YEAR: 1905
Before the arrival of apartment blocks and
shopping malls, summer was a time of seemingly
endless, placid days. But there was
no shortage of enjoyment! North Beach, an
amusement park now the location of LaGuardia
Airport, was trumpeted as “nature’s own
playground.”
Beachgoers could take in fireworks shows while others
could dance the night away at dancing pavilions.
Those opting for a longer trip to the Rockaways could
stay in one of a number of beachside hotels, including
the Bay View, which boasted deep sea fishing.
Imagine spending a perfect summer day in a
Queens beer garden! Social events of the time included
a clambake at Jackson Avenue Park in Corona,
a grand trolley ride to College Point and a grand family
outing at Schuetzen Park at Broadway and Steinway
Street.
