WWII. Alice’s digging and research
results in the discovery that her
grandmother had a sister who was
never talked about.
“The story took shape from a lot of
primary documents and secondary
documents written during WWII or
about the period where I got a ton of
my inspiration. I hope it opens people’s
eyes to the side of the French
revolution that is less known. There
were many women who did a lot of
heroic things,” Taylor said.
The novel’s May release date came
at an inopportune time, as it coincided
with the pandemic. Fortunately,
Harper Teen (the imprint that published
Taylor’s debut) and book influencers
on Instagram invited Taylor
to do virtual events. It was the ideal
way for readers to hear about her
novel while practicing social distancing
— plus, it gave Taylor’s friends and
family in Toronto, Canada, a chance
to tune in.
But Taylor still found opportunities to
celebrate the release closer to home.
Astoria Bookshop hosted a virtual
signing event, during which Taylor
visited the temporarily closed shop
to sign ordered copies, which were
then shipped out to customers. Astoria
Bookshop currently offers online
ordering for shipping or pick-up
by appointment only.
