It’s hard to believe that a year ago, New York City
was just starting to shut down because of COVID-19.
Sometimes it feels as if no time at all has passed, and
other times it seems like the pandemic has stretched on
for much, much longer.
Western Queens has suffered through a lot in this
past year, but our community is strong. This month, we
talked to the owners of two businesses that opened in
the midst of the pandemic: Side B, a shop filled with
locally made products (page 14), and Nneji, a West
African restaurant by the owner of Ibari (page 26).
Plus, our neighborhood is looking toward the future.
Learn about the Astoria library renovation (page 21),
and take a peek at a proposed Astoria development’s
plan for a public space on the waterfront (page 22).
