“Side B is completely welcoming,
which is what a neighborhood store
should be. It’s a store you want to go
back to. There are many shops in Astoria
who stake claims in carrying and
supporting local products, but Side B
actually does. You can ask questions,
be yourself and walk out feeling good
about your purchase,” Mascia said.
Kon Incense began in the summer of
2020 after the two masseuses received
a box from a friend full of plant ingredients
for incense making. Mascia and
Ratliff loved the idea of using plants
and aromatherapy for healing and even
took a course on the history of making
natural and authentic incense. Made
with organic ingredients, Kon Incense’s
products are free from fabricated fillers,
perfumes and additives.
“Our approach to sustainability and
earth friendliness was definitely a draw-in
factor for Lyn. In fact, when you purchase
a jar of Kon Incense at Side B, and you
want more, you can go right back to Side
B and have your jar refilled,” Ratliff said.
Just after three months of being open,
Side B has quickly become the neighborhood
shop that showcases local
artists and makers from all walks of life.
Chin and her community of vendors
have cultivated a space where Astorians
and visitors can see the best of what
the neighborhood has to offer, whether
in the form of a cherished object or a
memorable experience.
