Juliet Romero ‘22
Holy Cross High School
Flushing, New York
As one of the many gifted
and talented students at Holy
Cross High School, Juliet has
distinguished herself both in and
out of the classroom. Earning
a cumulative weighted GPA of
104.743 is included among
her many accomplishments.
In the past two years, she
has completed six college
level courses, including AP
World History, AP English
Composition, AP Environmental
Science, AP US History.
Juliet’s academic success
began early while a student in
Holy Family Catholic Academy
in Fresh Meadows. By the end
of 8th grade, she had a final
average of 97 and was ranked
in the 99% percentile nationally
based on standardized
language and reading test
scores. When Juliet applied
to Holy Cross High School,
Ms. Mary Scheer, principal of
Holy Family Catholic Academy,
described Juliet as a very good
student, conscientious of her
work and grades while being
an active participant in class.
In elementary school, Juliet
made time to be an altar server
while participating in track,
swimming, and martial arts.
Juliet followed in the footsteps
of her older brothers Julius ’17
and Joseph ‘18 in becoming a
Knight, as she and her family
were well familiar with the
strong academic offerings
at Holy Cross as part of
their unique and competitive
STREAM (Science, Theology,
Robotics, Engineering, Arts, and
Mathematics) program. Juliet
made history as a member of
the first incoming co-ed class,
and will add to her family’s
legacy as she prepares for
graduation in June 2022.
Robert Botero ’00, Assistant
Vice President of Admissions
at Holy Cross, stated “Juliet
embodies the academic and
moral integrity that Holy Cross
looks for in our students. I am
excited that she will become
part of our school’s rich history
as one of the first young women
to graduate from Holy Cross!”
Juliet was accepted into the
school’s rigorous Blessed Father
Basil Moreau Honors program
on a partial scholarship, and
has excelled in her academic
pursuits. Dennis Lyons, Theology
Department Chairperson,
expressed, “Juliet is a great
student! She adapts well to
everything put in front of her
and she is very amicable. I was
happy that she was part of my
morning Driver’s Ed. class.”
Due to her stellar academic
record, Juliet earned a place in
the Science Research Program
at Holy Cross. This three-year
research program is accredited
by SUNY Albany, and allows
students to conduct research on
a topic of their choosing side-byside
with their mentor.
Cathy Kenny, Science
Department Chairperson and
moderator of the science
Research program, shared that
“Juliet is a tremendous asset to
our Science Research Program.
She is a focused, diligent,
responsible young woman who
has the potential to achieve
amazing things in life!”
Juliet is currently continuing
her research on the study
of web-based rehabilitation
strategies for treating pediatric
traumatic brain injuries (TBI). In
her own words, Juliet describes
the “... main objective of
my study is to explore webbased
rehabilitation strategies
in facilities that are used to
reduce the negative outcomes
of pediatric TBI. My purpose
of placing a particular focus
on adolescents is to emphasize
the differences between adult
and adolescent brain injury
and the strategies specialized
for children, primarily because
of their contrastive brain
development. By determining
the specific rehabilitation
strategies in children that are
proven effective for the long
term, clinicians may be able
to utilize specific strategies
that predict and decrease the
outcome of pediatric TBI.” Next
Spring, Juliet will present her
findings during Holy Cross’s
annual Science Symposium.
Outside of the classroom,
Juliet, a former CYO athlete,
has proved herself in track,
soccer, and volleyball. Girls
Varsity Track Team Head Coach
Nydia Warner enthuses, “I
have been extremely proud
watching Juliet improve and
reaching goals. Even with the
limited training time due to the
pandemic, she learns new and
different workouts for her events.
In freshman year she perfected
her long-jump techniques and
was introduced to high jump
and the 400m hurdles. During
the CHSAA League 2021
Outdoor Season she placed
second in both jumping events.
Her tenacity and leadership
qualities earned her the position
of Captain of the Team.”
Even with her full course-load
and athletic commitments at
her school, Juliet remains active
in her community as volunteer
track assistant coach at St.
Kevin’s Catholic Academy and
as a teacher’s assistant at the
Kuei Luck Education Center.
Last year, she volunteered with
F.O.R.K.and helped distribute
lunch and PPE to direct frontline
workers in Manhattan, Brooklyn
and Queens. Juliet has also
been actively involved in Kicks
for Kids, an organization that
collects and redistributes gently
used and new sneakers to
individuals in need located in
Haiti and the Philippines. This
year, she founded Knits for the
Needy.
It should come as no surprise
that Juliet is a highly soughtafter
candidate amongst the top
colleges and universities across
the country, especially having
earned an SAT score of 1400.
We wish her continued success
in her future endeavors!
