Cardozo wrestling remains undefeated
Judges pound their way to 66-18 victory over Edison to keep top spot in Region 7
BY ROBERT COLE
Both Cardozo and Edison
came into their match
undefeated with hopes of
maintaining the top spot
in Region 7, but it was the
Judges that captured the dual
meet with an impressive 66-18
victory.
“The match was not as
clean as we would have liked
it to be,” Cardozo coach Chris
Milani said. “But this year’s
group is working hard, they
are really dedicated to the
sport, which is cool.”
Each team sent out
quality wrestlers, showing
why they were battling for
the No. 1 spot in the region.
As the match advanced,
Cardozo’s wrestlers earned
their victories due, in part,
to their strong conditioning,
which enabled them to
consistently gain advantages
late in their matches.
Milani credited an assistant
coach for keeping the wrestlers
in great shape.
“My assistant coach, John
Tsolekas, does a great job
conditioning the wrestlers,”
Milani said. “He pushes them
hard each and every single day
and he makes it fun for them, so
they don’t even realize that they
are working so hard.”
Cardozo took the first two
matches by forfeit when Edison
was unable to field wrestlers in
the 99- and 106-pound weight
classes, which led to victories
for Danny Ou and Hunter Hoo.
The next five matches all
favored the Judges as Ashtin
Reich (113 pounds), Richard
Yang (120 pounds), Lawrence
Liang (126 pounds), Andy Wu
(132 pounds), and Perry Sham
(138 pounds) pinned their Edison
opponents to give Cardozo a
commanding 42-0 team lead.
Edison earned its first victory
of the match when Orlando
Lucero outlasted Cardozo’s,
Shane Phillips, for the 13-6
decision in the 145-pound bout.
But Cardozo’s Quincy
Howard gave momentum back
to the Judges when he pinned
his opponent, John Aguaiza
Mayance, in the 152-pound
bout.
Kevin Hernandez gave
Edison another victory when
he quickly pinned his opponent
in the 160-pound match,
bringing the total score to 48-9
in favor of Cardozo.
Latrell Cleary (170 pounds)
added to the Judges lead
with a pin; however, Edison
would continue to show its
fighting spirit, capturing
the next two matches at 182
pounds and 195 pounds, when
Justin Henry battled to a 6-4
decision and Brain Lo won by
fall, respectively.
Michael Sabo (220 pounds)
and Jonathan Chen (285 pounds),
finished up the match, pinning
their opponents to secure a 66-18
victory for Cardozo.
The Judges ended the match
with nine pins and two forfeits,
giving them victories in 11 of
the 15 matches.

The team victory gives
Cardozo victories over Edison
and Francis Lewis, the two
teams tied for second place
who sit directly below the
Judges in the standings.
Cardozo hopes to
continue its winning ways
in the last two meets of the
season against Flushing and
Springfield Gardens, as the
squad continues to prepare
for the borough and citywide
championship tournaments.
“We don’t think too far
in the future, we just take
it day by day,” Milani said.
“We work on us and try to
prepare ourselves for every
single situation, so when our
athletes get tested, they are
ready. We are going to keep
working and where it takes
us it takes us.”
