Goodbye A380
Airbus and Emirates announced
that the airline had decided to transfer
existing orders for A380s to
smaller A350s and A320s. Less than
14 years after its maiden flight, the
A380 is being mothballed. Only 17
more of the planes will be completed,
wrapping up in 2021. Emirates, its
most loyal customer, said it’s switching
to smaller aircraft.
Norwegian Could
Norwegian’s expansion comes
when many other airlines have been
critical of the carrier for aggressive
expansion. Late in 2018, it was chastised
for having an outstanding balance
of debt (the carrier later raised
the necessary funding). Their expansion
interested some companies
such as IAG, the parent company of
British Airways, to make several
attempts to it over. To lighten burdens,
Norwegian stopped service to
French Caribbean Islands while adding

has announced a restructuring.
The airline experienced heavy
losses during the past four years totaling
USD$200 million.
The airline’s longest route, which
connects Quito and New York City,
was cut. The route will be canceled
effective 1 February, 2019. Quito will
no longer have a direct flight to New
York, although flights from JFK to
Guayaquil will continue onboard LATAM
767s.
KLM Royal Dutch Airlines CEO
Pieter Elbers will stay at the helm of
the Dutch carrier and assume the additional
role of Air France-KLM deputy
CEO alongside the French unit’s
CEO Anne Rigail. Air France-KLM
detailed a new management structure
aimed at simplifying decision-making
and capturing synergies across the
group. The plan was presented to Air
France-KLM’s board of directors by
group CEO Benjamin Smith.
Great Dane to fly
The new start up carrier will fly to
and from Aalborg Airport and Dublin
will be one of the first routes. “We
have identified under-capacity in the
northern European market for charter
flights and regional scheduled
flights with 100 to 120-seat jets,” explains
Møller, chief executive of the
new airline.
“This gave us the idea to start an
airline with strong North Jutland
roots.”
