After a spontaneous trip in the winter of 2011
to the Mirror Lake Shuffl eboard Club in St.
Petersburg, Florida, owners Ashley Albert and
Jonathan Schnapp set out to build a shuffl eboard
club in Brooklyn. By July 2012, they’d secured
the lease on a 17,000 square foot warehouse in
Gowanus and set about raising money to make
their vintage-Florida Shuffl eboard dreams
come true. It took another year and a half of
fundraising, designing and permitting before the
doors to The Royal Palms Shuffl eboard Club were
ready to open in the winter 2013. Today, people
from all over the world come to visit and fall in
love with the game. The Royal Palms Monday and
Tuesday Night Shuffl eboard League has become
the largest in the world and Ashley and Jonathan
are now internationally ranked shuffl eboard
players.

The Bell House celebrated its 11th anniversary
in August and the comedy and live music
venue has been a pioneer in the industrial-hip
neighborhood of Gowanus since it set up shop.
The former warehouse hosts big-name and

When you want to dance the night away to
unique musical acts, head over to the House of
Yes on the Ridgewood/Bushwick border. The
first House of Yes started innocently enough- in
April of 2007, a friend of a friend was looking
for someone to take over their lease on a 2, 500
square foot second floor loft located at 1949
Troutman St. The place was a wreck, a hippiepunk
squat house complete with hallways filled
with trash, leaky ceilings and curious odors. “It
is perfect,” said Anya Sapozhnikova. She signed
the lease. And so it began. This was a project
driven by passion, not dollars. The goal was to
build a true creative liv e/ work space that could
host an occasional dance party or circus class.
