The American Cancer Society estimates that
over 5,000 women will die of cervical
cancer in the United States this year, with a
total of 14,000 women being diagnosed.
One of the most common and effective
methods of diagnosing cervical cancer is a
pap smear, also known as a pap test. A pap
test is also an accurate way of testing for
Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a virus which
is a cause for developing cervical cancer in
the future. The HPV virus is most commonly
spread through sexual activity.
The current guidelines recommend routine
screening for all sexually active women
between the ages of 21-29 should be
screened with a pap test at least every
