How do I keep my pet safe with this hot weather?
Temperatures can get very hot in the summer and asphalt/sidewalks
get even hotter. Walking on such hot surfaces can hurt their paw pads
so make sure to walk your dog in the early morning, late evening
(preferably when the sun has gone down) or on grass. This can also
help prevent heat stroke when it is very hot & humid out. Remember,
they’re wearing a fur coat and don't sweat like we do. So, if you must
go out with your pet, keep them hydrated and cool them off as often as
you can. Most importantly, never ever leave your pets in the car! Even
for a few minutes with the windows open, it can quickly cause
 dangerous heat stroke or death.
When do I switch my pet from puppy/kitten to adult food?
 - Cats generally transition to an adult diet when they turn 1 year of age.
 - Depending on the dog breed it's the same, however if you have a
large breed puppy, the transition to adult occurs at approximately 18
 months of age.
 - Vomiting and/or diarrhea can occur when switching the food too
quickly, therefore, anytime you change your pet’s diet you should do so
gradually over about one week. The first 2 days you give 75% of the
 puppy/kitten food & 25% of the new adult food, days 3-4 50% old 50%
new, days 5-6 you give 75% new 25% old and by day 7 they should be
 solely on the new diet.
What should I do if I notice my cat is eating a lot but noticeably
 losing weight?
 - First things first, schedule an appointment with your cat’s
veterinarian. They'll perform a physical exam & recommend some
blood work that will include checking their thyroid values as well as
sending out a fecal sample. The most common reasons for weight loss
in an older cat can be hyperthyroidism or kidney disease. There are a
few other diseases that can be seen via simple blood tests as well.
 - The reason for checking a fecal sample yearly is because our feline
patients are also hunters. They love to chase bugs, mice, etc. so we
 should check for intestinal parasites.
When can my puppy go outside on walks, and play with other
 dogs?
It doesn’t necessarily depend on the age of the puppy. It all depends on
their vaccine status, so please check with your veterinarian and don’t
just let him or her mingle with other dogs until they are well protected.
Generally for puppy play groups such as doggie day care, they will be
on similar schedules, but always be sure that the location you go to
 asks for a vaccine records.
