This one-day, eight-hour boat safety course is designed to be an introductory course to meet the boating education needs of recreational boaters and PWC Operators. EDITOR’S PICK MONDAY, JULY 28 Artist Rita Tabb will discuss the works of Georgia O’Keefe, famed for her drawings of nature and paintings of fl owers using bold colors and abstract shapes, at the Briarwood Library at 85-12 Main St. The event is called “Georgia O’Keeffe: Variations on a Theme.” Following the discussion, participants will create their own works of art with crayons and colored pencils, using color photos of O’Keeffe’s work as inspiration. TUESDAY, JULY 29 Following the success of the pilot edition in 2013, Mare Nostrum Elements is partnering once again with LaGuardia Performing Arts Center (LPAC) and getting ready for the Emerging Choreographer Series 2014-2015. Auditions are from 1:30 to 5 p.m. and located at Little Theater at LPAC at 31-10 Thomson Ave. Please arrive between 1 to 1:30 p.m and admission is free. Register at waves@mnelements. org. There will be a warm up, followed by some movement exploration to generate a physical sequence, interaction with others and a presentation of the results to the class. Emerging choreographers accepted into the program must be able to participate to all weekly meetings, consultation sessions and tech times. “An Affair to Remember” will be shown at the Kew Gardens Community Center at 80-02 Kew Gardens Road Suite 202 at 1 p.m. It stars Gary Grant, Deborah Kerr and Richard Denning – it is a must see! The movie is 119 minutes long. WEDNESDAY, JULY 30 Current or former smokers age 50 to 80 can get free lung cancer screenings on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Forest Hills Hospital, located at 102-01 66th Rd. This screening program, offered by the North Shore-LIJ Health System, uses a CT scanner to take pictures of your lungs. The scan takes about fi ve minutes and uses lowdose radiation similar to a chest X-ray. CT scans for lung cancer have been PhotoCourtesy-Play4Autism proven to be able to detect the tiniest tumors at an early, more curable stage. Preregistration for this program is required. Queens Museum presents Passport Thursdays 2014, the ninth season of the museum’s annual outdoor summer festival of international music, dance and fi lm returning after the opening of the Museum’s expansion in November 2013. Take a trip to India from 7 to 10 p.m. as Sonali Skandan and Jiva Dance create and present compelling and dynamic works based on the timeless idiom of Bharatanatyam, the classical dance form of South India . There will also be an Indian fi lm, “The World Before Her,” shown. The fi lm is 90 minutes long and subtitles include English and Hindi with English.
